Chapter three! Now we finally get more into Alyssa's life as a newsie, as well as meeting the other girl newsies. Jack is now 18 and Alyssa is 16. Enjoy!

Three years later Alyssa found herself waking up to the sound of Mr. Kloppman shouting at all the newsies to get up. She and the three other girls in the lodging house headed to their small washroom. Alyssa headed to one of the stalls to bind up her small chest and change into her newsie clothes. She left the stall and went to wash her face and brush her hair with a pearl brush that had been one of her mother's only nice possessions.

"Good mornin' Alyssa," Ella said. Ella was two years older than Alyssa, and very tall, unlike Alyssa. She had chestnut brown hair that just reached the top of her shoulders and deep green eyes. Alyssa grunted in response. She was not a morning person; she had had too many mornings that were most definitely not good.

"Come on Alyssa. It doesn't hurt you to answer," Kate said, laughing. She was a year younger than Alyssa, but also taller. She had raven-black hair and black sparkling eyes.

"Well, what if it turns out to be a horrible mornin'? Why would I say good mornin' if I don't even know if it's good or not yet," Alyssa countered.

"Oh please, you think about things too much. It's just a nice way of saying hi," Lucy said laughing as she joined the other girls in the washroom. Lucy was three years younger than Alyssa, but she got along great with the older girls. She was also taller than Alyssa with dark brown hair and light brown eyes. The newsies seldom got new girl newsies, so the ones there were usually older and fewer. This particular group of girls had all been newsies for at least 5 years, so they were all very close.

Gonna clarify, yes I only described the girls' appearance and no I don't feel bad because the guys are all based on their broadway actors. Anyway so you don't have to do the math: Ella is 18, Kate is 15, and Lucy is 13. You're welcome.

"Well, it's not my fault you all are so happy in the morning. Really what is there to be happy about when it's so early?" Alyssa replied grumpily.

"Well aren't you fresh as a daisy this mornin'," Jack joked as Alyssa made her way out the lodging-house door.

"Don't push it, Jacky," Mush warned as he pushed ahead of Jack and Alyssa, "Alyssa looks ready to murder someone."

"What ya mean Mush?" Jack pressed, "Lyss looks like a harmless little kitten this mornin'. So pretty and cute and-"

"That's it!" Alyssa shouted. She grabbed the cap off of Jack's head and took off running as fast as she could.

"Oh, it's on!" Jack ran after Alyssa trying to get his cap back.

Jack was bigger and stronger than Alyssa, but Alyssa was more agile and easily ducked under and jumped over obstacles. Jack instead just shoved through anybody and anything that stood in his way. The newsies laughed and ran after the chase. It wasn't uncommon for this to happen in the morning. Everyone generally stayed away from Alyssa early in the day. Jack on the other hand had a death wish, so he tried his best to piss Alyssa off before work. This usually led to her stealing his cap because if she fought him she would most likely lose. It was stupid of Jack, but it almost always worked. Alyssa was generally in a better mood after all the running.

Jack was just starting to gain on Alyssa when he ran into some new kids. "Hey! What do you think you're doing?" The older boy said, glaring. Jack took one look at Alyssa who was getting further away and grinned. "Runnin'!" He called as he hurried after his cap and his friend.

Alyssa had to stop when she reached the gate to the distribution center, so Jack took his chance and grabbed his hat as he jumped up onto the gate.
