Chapter four is here! We'll see a little bit of selling as well as life in the lodging house. Maybe even a little drama, too. Happy reading!

"Trolley Strike Enters Third Week! Come get your paper!" Alyssa laughed at David's sorry attempt to sell his newspapers. "Why don't you sing them to sleep," she joked walking over.

"Well, how would you do it?" David asked, defending himself. Alyssa grinned and grabbed the paper in David's hand. "Extry! Extry! Blazing inferno on Ellis Island causes thousands to flee in fear! You heard it right here, sir. Come get your mornin' pape!" Alyssa called. She proceeded to sell the newspaper to a businessman passing by. "Thank you, sir," Alyssa said, touching her hat and nodding her head. She waved the coin in front of David and dropped it into his hand. "You just made that up. You lied," David accused.

"I did not!" Alyssa protested. "I said he heard it right here, and he did." Jack laughed as he walked up to the two of them arguing.

"My father taught me not to lie," David insisted. Jack scoffed.

"Well mine taught me not to starve, so it looks like we both got an education," he said, stepping in front of Alyssa. Jack knew how sensitive the topic of fathers was to her.

"I just sold my last pape!" Les said joining the group.

"Good," David said, "how about we head for lunch now. Care to lead the way?" he asked, turning to Jack and Alyssa.

"Ya just follow us," Jack answered.

The four sat down at a table just as Race joined them. "How's it going, Alyssa?" He asked as he playfully pulled Alyssa's hat off.

"Race wait!" Alyssa cried, but it was too late. Her dirty blonde hair had already tumbled down past her shoulders, and David and Les were able to get a good look at her face without her cap shading it from view.

"I knew it!" David cried while Les asked, "You're a girl?"

"Yes. I'm a girl. What of it?" Alyssa asked, daring them to make fun of her.

"N-nothing," David shuddered beneath Alyssa's glare, "j-just, well, you're a very pretty girl." Race and Jack each gave David a fierce glare.

"Well thanks, hotshot," Alyssa said sarcastically. David was about to say something when he saw that both boys were glaring very protectively, so he shut his mouth. "You're all idiots. Let's just order," Alyssa said, rolling her eyes. "Yes, I'm a girl. My real name is Alyssa. Now that we've discovered this doesn't matter, we can forget it happened and eat lunch."

"Discovered is a big word, Lyss. Where'd ya learn it?" Jack teased, changing the subject.

"You're forgetting that before you found me I went to school for a couple years. So believe it or not, I'm not as much of an idiot as you." Before Jack could say anything that might end up with him dead, Lucy walked into the diner and pulled Alyssa away from all the boys.

"Alyssa, you'll never believe it!" She shouted.

"Shush Lu, unless this information is for the whole world. What won't I believe?"

"It's Kate! She was just kissing Specs!" Lucy whispered.

"No way! Really? Where is she? Come on, I need to talk to her!" Alyssa said, hurriedly shoving her hair into her cap.

"Lyss wait!" Jack called as Alyssa moved for the door with Lucy. "You need to eat!" But Alyssa ignored Jack and left the diner running to find Kate.

"I'm confused," David said, bringing Jack's attention back to the people he was sitting with. "How come the other girl newsies sell their newspapers as girls, but Ca- Alyssa sells hers as a boy?"
