Moon

A dragon was flying towards Moon. She didn't look up. She just continued picking at her goat.

Who knew heartbreak could hurt so much?

"Moon, are you okay?" She knew that voice. It was Shard. She still didn't look up.

"I'm not a good hunter," Shard confessed, "but I don't like fruit. So, I was wondering, you know, if I could, sort of, share that goat with you." Moon didn't reply.

"Moon? Moon?" Shard asked.

"Sure," she mumbled, hoping it was relevant. She felt him move beside her. His icy cold scales chilled hers like rain. He's so much colder than Qibli, she thought, with a fresh wave of heartache.

"Th-th-thank you," Shard stuttered. There was something odd about the way he was behaving, and the oddness of it all made her mind reading blocking slip. Suddenly his thoughts were in her head, as loud as a waterfall.

I blew it. Why couldn't I talk normally. Girl dragons make me nervous, but now she'll never feel the same way. Why couldn't I do it. Wait she's a mind reader, she knows. A wall of ice slammed around his thoughts, cold and hard and impenetrable.

Now that her mind was open, she heard thoughts everywhere.

Why can't I tell my story, everyone was loving it.

Why didn't he tell me.

Oh, look, it's Alba. She came after all.

HE'S HERE. WILL HE NOTICE ME?

That last thought was from Ebony, a young NightWing who was new to the school.

Which 'he' does she mean? thought Moon. Ebony's next thought answered her question.

QIBLI! Ebony's mind screamed. DID HE LIKE MY PAINTING? COULD HE TELL WHAT IT MEANT?

She turned her night-black eyes towards the SandWing staring straight at Moon and Shard.

Oh no, Moon thought. She watched Qibli look away, deftly catch a cow, and walk over to Ebony.

That was a rejection. He doesn't like me. He likes her.

"You're a good hunter," Shard said.

"What makes you think that?" Moon asked cautiously.

"You caught a goat, I can never do that. Seals are my specialty. Anything else, whoosh, there it goes," Shard replied matter-of-factly.

If I compliment her, maybe she'll like me more, his mind whispered.

"Do you like me?" She asked suddenly. Shard stiffened.

"H-how did you guess," Shard stammered, "Oh right, m-mind reader."

Moon looked at him, it looked like he was terrified and elated at the same time.

"So, do you want to go flying together," Shard asked nervously.

Moon thought to herself, I have no chance with Qibli, so maybe it's a good idea.

"Yes," she said.
