(2) ILL INTENTIONS

I didn't know when Jasper had moved, but as I glanced at the sudden inversion of someone being at my side, he was there. He stared straight ahead, even as he seemed to be protecting me from something.

"We are family, even if they do not share our own beliefs."

She hummed, before she grinned. "Aro will be interested in them. Both of them."

"They will go to see him then," Edward answered. "But no crimes have been committed today by either."

"That is irrelevant."

"Do you wish for a fight?" Carlisle asked as he took a step forward. "We have stopped the newborns and now we wish to move on from the tragedy that had occurred."

"Aro hoped that we would get far enough west to see you, Carlisle. He sends his regards," Jane said as she composed herself. "Very well, Aro will be informed about this."

"I would appreciate it if you would convey mine to him," Carlisle said. "And that I will have my family come to see him if he wishes to see how today events were played."

"Of course." She looked at the smoke. "It appears that you've done our work for us today... for the most part." Once more her eyes flickered to me and then to someone behind me. "Just out of professional curiosity, how many were there? They left quite a wake of destruction."

I stared at the group, feeling as if they were edging for a fight. Or for what Edward had warned against. Would they really try to do something, even after both Edward and Carlisle said something?

"Seventeen."

Jane eyes widen for a second. I glanced at Carlisle, wondering just what had truly happened and how this fight could have come.

Had Edward gotten on the bad side of another vampire?

"Seventeen?" Jane repeated in disbelief.

"All brand-new," Carlisle dismissed the disbelief in a second. "They were unskilled."

I looked at the group of strange vampires once more as a part of me played over what I heard. Brand-new. Unskilled. Destruction in Seattle.

It sounded like an army was making its way this way and these new vampires were sent to deal with it but had arrived just after the Cullens had. It unsettled me.

"All?" Her eyes fell onto me. "Then who was their creator?"

Feeling a sense of getting blamed, could feel my face shifting to show the snarl that as building up. I had no reason to attack my own town.

"Victoria," Edward answered, the warmth that was once there no longer holding onto his words.

"Victoria?"

"Yes, that was her name."

"Was?" Jane asked. "This Victoria... she was in addition to the seventeen here?"

"Yes."

"Who dealt with the creator?"

A moment followed before Edward answered. "I did."

Her eyes snapped away from Edward. I tensed, feeling the anger that suddenly showed on her face.

"Don't," Edward warned. "We already told you they weren't part of it."

Her face was of utter hostility.

"You there, your name?" Her words were just as harsh as the look on her face.
