"So, Sophie..." Keefe started.
"No, Keefe, we are not there yet. We have literally been walking for two minutes, and yet you have asked me 'are we there yet' 150 times. Yes I counted. No, we are not there yet."
"Sheesh Foster, I was only going to ask you what Splash Mountain was like. What do you do? I've never actually seen a ride before, so I was just curious..."
"Oh, you'll know it when you see it," I said. "And when you hear the screams," I added for good measure. Everyone behind me gulped a little.
"Is it just me, or has Foster been getting a little scary recently?" Keefe asked, but before anyone could answer they heard loud shrieks and a splash. We turned the corner, and right in front of us was Splash Mountain.
"Sophie, did all those humans just... you know," and Tam made a little slashing motion across his throat.
"No Tam, they aren't dead. That is where we are going."
My friends watched as another log full of people came into view, and then suddenly plunged into what looked like a watery grave as all the passengers screamed like their life was over.
"I was afraid you would say that," Dex said. "You know what, I think I understand why elves don't have amusement parks. I'm just going to go home, rest in my nice comfy safe bed, maybe tinker with some gadgets, eat some mallowmelt..."
"Oh, come on Dexy," Keefe said. "You aren't going to miss out because you're scared are you?" Keefe started flapping his arms around and doing a wiggly chicken dance.
"I'm not scared, Keefe. I'm terrified. I don't want to die today. I can tell that that.. thing .. is not super stable. I would fight the Neverseen over this any day."
"Well too bad," I said. "We are doing this and you are going to like it." Keefe gave Dex a smug grin. "Oh, and Keefe," I said smiling. "Yeah, Foster?" "You are going to sit in the front."
"Wouldn't have it any other way," he retorted, but I could tell he looked a little paler than before. In fact, all my friends looked pale, except for Fitz, who was turning an embarrassing shade of green.
We had to climb a few stairs to get up there, but there were only a couple of people in front of us. Sandor had opted to stay behind, claiming that he could save us when we inevitably fell to our deaths at the end of the ride. His reasoning made sense, but I'm also pretty sure he would rather face an army of ogres than come on the ride. I was really excited, I hadn't done this in years. Also, I couldn't wait to see my friends' reactions to all the singing. I hadn't told them about the animatronics before the drop.
Finally, it was our turn to get in. Keefe and I sat in the front, Fitz and Biana sat behind us trying to look brave, Linh was trying to comfort Tam behind them, and poor Dex sat in the back.
"Okay, I've added some additional security measures to this back seat," Dex began. "Thankfully, I brought some tools with me just in case."
"That sounds great Dex," I said. "Heads up though, the people in the back may not get as wet, but they can feel the drop better than anybody else."
Keefe turned around and smirked at Dex, who was noticeably panicking. The ride started moving, and Keefe slung his arm around me and whooped, while everybody else gripped the bars even tighter.
"Oh, and just so y'all know, the humans will be taking pictures of us when we are dropped off the side of the mountain, so don't do anything embarrassing because I will keep the picture forever and tease you forever if you do," I threatened. They all nodded back at me nervously. "And you shouldn't hold on to the bars when you are dropped. Fling your hands in the air, it makes it much more thrilling." Keefe immediately put both his hands in the air. "Keefe, it will be a while before we actually fall," I said.
