Chapter 14 • "you make a hospital gown smell so good!"
A few nights later, since it was a Friday night, Armaan, Anjali, and Atul were at Armaan and Anjali's parents' place. Friday nights were their parents' nights and regardless of how busy they were as long as they weren't on duty, they ate dinner together. Their mother was the Emily Gilmore of the family, in a way.
"It doesn't even feel like Anjali lives here, I get we don't see Armaan because he lives alone, but this girl, its funny how we barely see her nowadays" Their dad, Mr. Balwinder Mallik shook his head while sipping his red wine from the antique crystal wine glasses his wife had bought from London during their last trip.
"Dad, you know being an intern is not easy! I have to work day and night to get to where I want to be!" Anjali replied by putting some more gravy on her plate from the bowl. "And on top of that I am working on this big case with Armaan, we have so much research to do and you expect me to be home in front of you!" She retorted, making Ananya shake her head at her workaholic kids.
"But you were complaining that you didn't get this case because Armaan chose Riddhima?" Balwinder stated confusingly.
"Seriously, you complained to dad? Can you stop being childish for once, Anjali?" Armaan scoffed, shocked at his sister's actions, glaring at her who returned the glare. He was already irritated, now that she was on the case. She was never his first choice however now with Riddhima's injury, she was his second best option.
"Uh" Atul nervously laughed, knowing that the atmosphere ws thickening. Wiping his mouth with a napkin, he cleared his throat before speaking, "the thing is, Riddhima got into an accident a few days ago and she's currently hospitalized so -"
"What?" Ananya exclaimed in shock, dropping her fork on her plate. "Riddhima got into a car accident?" Balwinder, equally shocked, stopped chewing and looked at Atul as he was joking.
"Oh here we go!" Anjali rolled her eyes at her mother's dramatic reaction. "Seriously mom, it wasn't a big deal, she is fine now" Anjali replied nonchalantly, continuing with her food.
"Anjali" Atul snapped, not liking the way his fiancé's tone, especially for someone who she called her best friend.
"Are you serious?" Armaan asked her, highly offended. "How is it not a big deal? She almost lost her leg?"
"Why the hell are you getting so defensive?" Slamming her wine glass on the table, she emphasized on you, suspicious about his behaviour. Lately he became so defensive when it came to her friends, or was it just Riddhima?
"I am not being defensive, I am being humane and considerate. She is your friend, and a fellow employee," he paused trying to choose his words wisely. He wanted to yell at the same time "and my girlfriend, the love of my life" however he chose not to disclose his relationship in the heat of the moment. He continued after taking a deep breath "who was injured in a very bad car crash, who got lucky enough to not only survive the crash but to also keep her leg intact. Real mature Anjali, real mature of you-"
