Toriel had Sans for the day. There was an incident with a human breaking into the lab and tagging the walls and they didn't want to bring him back into the Underground in case it triggered something. "Hey Sans?" The skeleton hummed in response as he walked beside the goat woman. Toriel was one of the people Sans understood the least. He'd never had a parental figure, so her kindness and worry towards others, excpecally Frisk, was confusing. "How do you like living with Papyrus?" He looked at Toriel. "it is satisfactory. why?" She shook her head lightly. "No reason in particular. In fact, I'm glad it was your brother who took you in. You’ve made so much progress. I'm so proud!" She cheered. There she went again. Why would she be proud of him if they barely knew each other outside of the hangout sessions? "i don't understand.." She gave a warm smile. "Fret not, you will come to understand eventually." She assured. "where are we going? i've not been to this part of the city." Sans commented, looking around the unusually crowded streets. "I'm taking you to meet an old friend. I think you'll like him." Toriel giggled, further confusing the skeleton.
🤍🤍🤍
A bell chimed as Toriel opened the door to a monster restaurant. The skeleton stepped through first, quietly thanking her for holding the door for him. She proceeded to guide him to the bar with an amused, "Come along, Sans, this way." Sans had never seen such a warm and welcoming atmosphere aside from Papyrus place. Monsters and humans from all corners of the place greeted him and Sans wasn't sure if he should greet them back or be overwhelmed. This was only the start. He and Toriel sat at the stools of the bar, Toriel calling to a fire monster cleaning a cup. "You steam to have forgotten that I was coming today." Sans blinked. Was that a slip of the tongue? The monster walked over, chuckling. "Now don't get heated Toriel. Who's your friend?" Sans gaze switched between the two. Were they doing that on purpose? "This is Sans. I've been telling you about him, remember?" Grillby nodded. "Ah yes, well he looks nothing like what I imagined. Here, give me a minute, he's just bones." Grillby than disappeared in the back. "i- what?"
"Those were puns, Sans. They make people laugh, aside from Papyrus!" Puns.. huh.🤍🤍🤍
Grillby came out with ketchup and a basket of fries for Sans, putting them down on the counter for him while throwing a pun at Toriel. Sans at a fry, immediately loving the flavor of the new food item. "It's better with the ketchup." Toriel encouraged. Sans gave a curious tilt of his skull before shrugging and unscrewing the cap. Sans, apparently not know what a condiment was, drank it instead of dunking his fries in it. Grillby and Toriel watched in bewilderment as he did it too, they didn't have the words to describe what they were witnessing. Sans put down the now empty ketchup bottle. "that was good." He praised before continuing with his fries. They exchanged a look than shrugged. To each their own they supposed. They then started throwing something else around. Jokes. Puns and jokes. "Knock knock." Toriel knocked on the counter top, catching Sans attention again. "Who's there?" Grillby replied. "Canoe." Toriel responded. "Canoe who?" Poor Sans was so confused. "Canoe get me the bill? We must be off." Toriel and Grillby laughed. "Nah, they're on the house. You two have a good day." Toriel bid Grillby the same before they left. Sans decided that he'd have to come back again.
Toriel took Sans garage saling for the rest of the day, which was actually fine by him since he found more things that he wanted along with a thing or two that he felt someone else would like. Among the things he got was a joke book. He wanted to know how to make people laugh and it was as good a start as any. Toriel had no clue the monster she'd given start to..
