Please read (author's note!): This is the first chapter of what I'm considering of turning into a short fanfic since two parts wouldn't be sufficient. Please let me know if you would read more of this storyline!

The room was merely lit by the computer screens as I kneed before it.
Something strange had occurred.
The internet - a promising yet so dangerous place I had been fascinated with since my toddlerhood - surely bore numerous mysteries.
But at my teenage, what I was discovering deeply baffled me. Someone appeared to be out there - someone with the desire of challenging me.

Excitedly, my eyes scanned the green letters on the screen again and again as I contemplated how to proceed.

"L, I have discovered who and where you are. My evidence is included at the end of this page. What do you think - do you want to play a game with me?"

Whereas I had scanned the message again and again, in countless attempts of deciphering the identity of my adversary, I found it so perfectly coded that nothing could be deduced from it.
Nothing but what he - or she? Decided to expose to me.

"...I will be waiting for your response, detective. To keep it enthralling to you, I will remain in the dark as you. You may refer to me as ~. Do you dare challenge me?"

So this is where it begins. Another battle of detectives. After my clash with Deneuve and Coil, I supposed for this person to lose their name to me as well quite soon, if it had ended that way, it might have been for the best.

The years went by, and not only did I become more curious of my adversary, but I also became cautious as I grew up. This person is certainly not to underestimate- they are of such a cunning and provocative nature that even I cannot ignore.

Therefore, instead of challenging them, I stayed away and casually replied to their challenges and games without displaying too much information, when one day, it occurred:

I discovered their location.

By some unfortunate mistake, there had been a fault in the coding and my adversary's whereabouts laid bare before my eyes. How did I proceed?

Whereas I developed a cautious suspicion of this person, they had playfully interacted with me, seemed to have been seeking a person on their level. Never did they actively threaten me - so why should I have invaded their privacy?
Only did I take note of their whereabouts for future references.

But not once did I believe that the time would come that I would need her help - or she would need mine...

"What about expressing your thoughts in a more simple manner for once? Not all of us have grown up with and as geniuses, remember."

I played around with the brim of my hat as my eyes scanned the message on the blinding computer screen. Whereas my mind was highly functioning and at its best concentration, it kindly ignored the complaint my companion had just uttered.

The message.
Nearly a decade had passed since I had first entered into contact with the infamous L. Suspicious, quiet, foolish L. The last person I had expected to approach me in ask for a favour.
Currently, strange murders were occurring around Japan, murders that were disguised as heart attacks.

Flashback

"~, TV on, immediately!"

I obeyed. What on earth rendered my companion so alarmed?

What I discovered filled me with mixed feelings.

"I would have never expected it had I not just witnessed it... Kira..."

What followed was an overly dramatic monologue of L to Kira which caused an emotional rollercoaster inside of me.

At first, I shook my head and closed my eyes, despite being highly impressed by the speed of L's previous investigative progress. In such little time, he had reduced Kira's whereabouts to the Kanto region.
However...

"Are you jealous?", my companion uttered.

"Excuse me? Don't be silly! I am neither a serial killer nor would I want to mingle in any way with that detective. Our interactions were merely... professional. They have disappeared as well."

"Says the one that still writes him every week...", he mumbled.

"I heard that! That's not true", I lied to myself.
Exposed, I straightened my beige hat.
How exciting would it be to watch everything unfold....

Present time

"~, you are amongst the very few people who are like me. If you do not mind, I ask you to assist me on the Kira case. If you comply, I want to discuss the matter with you at your whereabouts - I discovered them years ago.
Don't worry- it was a coding mistake, I did not break through everything."

Hours and hours passed as I anticipated what would happen. Eventually, I gave in. Hadn't it been me that had approached L in the first place, in want of a worthy opponent? However, from his usual interactions with him, it appeared as if I was not a friend to him, but rather an enemy. I should not care - if he would treat me as one, I would gladly contribute to the act.

The day of confrontation went by rather fiending. Whereas I was secretly unusually excited to finally face my adversary, the nervousness devoured me from the inside. I however tried to remain myself - and put a hat on that would initially hide my face, subconsciously trying to hide my chaotic emotions.

In concentration I sat before my computer with my companions at my side when I suddenly saw them jump out of the corner of my eyes.

"So we meet at last", I exclaimed while still not turning around as I tried to keep my composure.

"~... I thank you for your trust."

"L."

Finally, I turned around on my chair and looked at my adversary over the shoulder, lifting the brim of my hat to augment my field of vision.

"~."

What I discovered was beyond anything I had expected.
I had just thrown a hasty glance at L before I turned around anew, in hope of preventing any emotions from appearing on my face, albeit allowing me to smile at him.

L's glance and attitude towards me had been just as I had feared - he detested me. It was no friendship in his eyes. It was my skill alone that brought him here which could be of use to him in his investigation.

But who would I be if I denied such a challenge?
