The day had come. L and I had finally found the solution to the current case, so we had informed the police who were already on their way to arrest the accountable criminal.

Strangely enough, he did not pay any resistance towards the policemen, which was of course easier for them.
But now, it meant farewell - farewell to L. This would be the last time we would ever see each other, I thought.

As I got back from the NPA, I silently entered the hotel room we had been investigating in lately. L was sitting on one of the chairs in his usual creeping position with his knees pulled up towards his chest. When I looked at him, I noticed that his eyes were closed.

"Are you... sleeping?", I whispered.

"Oh no", L replied slowly, "Just thinking."

I approached him and sat down on a chair in front of him.

"L, I have come to ask... about what will happen now."

"Yes. Well", L began as he opened his eyes.
"First of all, we have to give all necessary explanations to the police and get rid of all other information we might still have. Then I'm going to change my place of investigation. Usually, after I've worked with someone who has seen my face and knows my name, if I told them at least, I tell them to try and forget both of those. To carry on with what they learned but forget everything else. That they may mention they worked together with me, but not reveal anything about my person. Then I usually tell them farewell."

"I... I understand." Looking down at the floor, I tried to hold back any emotions. It had usually been very easy for me to control my face and not show any signs of sadness, but now it was nearly impossible.

The person I had irrationally fallen in love with over the course of a dangerous investigation just told me we would never meet again. How could I ever forget him?
L Lawliet was such a special person. I had never met anyone like him before. While others might describe him as strange in an insulting way, I saw that strangeness as something so deeply positive. He stood out of the grey society with everything that he was and did. His witness - his skills of deduction. His whole character - the way he acted grumpy sometimes just to hide that he was happy for once. The way he always sat on his chair like a cat, the position that he would even sleep in sometimes. The fact that he always ate sweets like a maniac while investigating. The unusual way he would hold things by his fingertips as if they were made out of glass. I could never forget anything about him.

"You see, I'm not very fond of the idea myself", L suddenly said, interrupting the silence. I looked up in surprise, seeing him put a finger on his lips as he stared at the ceiling during his thought process.

"I couldn't tell you those things, now after I've fallen in love with you..."

IN LOVE?
My heart seemed to stop beating for a second.
This HAS to be a hallucination. There is no way L could have ever fallen in love with me. A hallucination, that was the only plausible explanation. I am dreaming.

"I can imagine what goes through your head right now", L conjectured, now lowering his head. "How could someone as calculating and rational as me fall in love? That is why I want you... to feel the beating of my heart. Then you will know."

"Are you... ser-"

"Yes."

I hesitated for a while until I stood up and approached him. L had lowered his head so much now that his eyes were hidden by the shadows his hair cast upon them. Very slowly, I put my hand on his chest.
Just as he had indicated before, L's heart was beating dramatically fast.
So this is how he wanted to prove that he had fallen in love with me.
