7: "I have no intention of making friends."

Before you could arrive to pick up Denji and Power, you and Aki dropped Makima off at the bureau. You decided to sit in the passenger seat this time around. The car ride was comfortable and silent. Aki would steal a few glimpses of you, making sure you were doing well. He was curious why you were sweating after waking up from your supposed nightmare. However, he didn't want to pry on your business. You would tell him what you were feeling when you were ready.

"You were probably wondering what my dream was earlier, right?" You spoke, breaking the silence.

"I'm just worried for you, that's all, I haven't seen you like that..." he says with concern laced on his lips. "Normally you smile every time I talk with you, so I guess it was just different this time around." He turns to look at you momentarily, "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to." letting out a breath he didn't realize he was holding in.

"Thank you for understanding Aki." you place your hand under your chin, looking out the window thinking about whether or not you should tell Aki the truth about your dream.

"So... are you excited for some real work?" Aki inquired as he looked at you.

You turn to face him, "Of course I'm excited, all I feel like I have been doing is stupid paperwork, or watch over Power and Denji." you chuckle, "I don't mind it... but I want to do work that will make me a better engineer ya know. That's the whole reason I came here." You turn, facing Aki, "I also get to meet your partner that you talked about, Himeno. No offense... I like talking with you. But I also want to have other friends." You respond back with a soft laugh.

"None taken, it's understandable you get bored of me." He said in a "distressed" tone, clearly pretending to be hurt.

You laughed and playfully punched his arm, "it's not that I get bored of you. I don't think I will..." Aki was taken aback by this admission from you. "I just want to have some girl friends as well, you know," you state happily.

"Hmm, I suppo-'' his smile faltered, "Aw fuck... looks like Denji is in trouble." Aki pulls to the side of the road. You both get out of the car quickly and Aki immediately walks over to the fight. You pull out a small notepad and start jotting notes, trying to see if you can possibly make some protective equipment for the team to wear. Aki on the other hand begins forming a fox with his hand and utters "Kon."

Your eyes widen when you see a white fox devil head come out and eat the worm-looking devil.

"It's the leech devil, is it okay to swallow it." The fox devil spoke.

"Fine," Aki responded

You looked around when your eyes caught a badly injured Denji and Power. You put your notepad away and head towards Denji to give him aid. While you only went to observe, after a couple of meetings with Denji, you felt fond for him, like a little brother who always likes getting in trouble. So you speed-walked with urgency, to make sure he couldn't hurt himself further.

While heading towards Denji, you saw three new faces. A woman with short hair and an eye patch, another short girl who wore two pins to hold her hair back, and a man with a scar across his cheek.

"Rookies, protect any survivors and help them evacuate," Aki spoke loudly.

"Yes sir!" Both the male with the scar and the girl with the pins said in unison.

" Himeno, keep watch for any other devils."

"All right !" The woman with the eyepatch said with a cheeky smile.

"So that's Himeno, she looks pretty. It's also interesting seeing Aki acting like a leader" you thought to yourself as you aided Denji.

"Battle dream... I... my dream battle... " Denji said in a tired and raspy voice.

"There, there Denji, don't speak so much okay. You're badly hurt and I want you to conserve as much energy as you can." You place your arm around Denji and begin to lift him. Aki goes to the opposite side of Denji and helps to carry the badly injured Denji. He looked at Denji, "you and the blood devil are coming with me for questioning."

You head straight to the hospital, while Aki and Himeno go to investigate Power's innocence in the bat devil incident. After the medic was done treating Denji, you head inside the room to check on him. After a few runs in with Denji, you got to learn more about him and his goals. He was a sweet kid in your mind, had very simple goals, and just wanted to live a normal life. You enter the door and see Denji staring at the ceiling.

"Hey Denji," you said softly "how ya feeling?"

"I'm doing better. I was able to prove my dream was better, so there's that," he responded.

"I saw that. Congrats," you mumbled while ruffling up his hair. "I just wanted to check in with you and make sure you are doing alright. Aki might come in later to talk with you, let's both hope he doesn't get too mad at you." you faintly laugh.

"I hope not. He gets on my nerves... Thanks for checkin' in." Denji looked up at you and smiled.

"It's nothing. I just want to make sure you are doing well. I'll head out now, if you need anything just holler." you respond, heading out of his room when you see him give you a thumbs up. "Ugh, hope that kid can stay safe," you thought to yourself.

You wait outside Denji's door alongside Himeno and Power. Aki enters the room to talk with Denji about his "investigation". You are silent just looking at the door in front of you.

"So I'm assuming you must be y/n, the new engineer that will be observing our division," Himeno spoke up.

"Yup I am, just a person observing from the sidelines, seeing if there's any way I can be of use," you respond. You extend your hand out to Himeno, "it's nice to meet you Himeno, Aki has told me a lot about you." you say with a smile.

Himeno takes your hand and returns the greeting. "Wish I could say the same thing about you. I heard that Makima pulled you in so I was wondering how you would fit into the team. Considering you aren't a devil hunter."

You don't know why Himeno's comment about Aki not mentioning you to her stung you, but you decide to let it go and continue with the conversation you are having with Himeno. "Yeh, I'm just an intern, but I think I was to draft out some plan and create a prototype for some sturdier suits considering you guys are placed in danger quite often."

"Ha no kidding, if your plan succeeds please send them my way," Himeno responded.

Both Himeno and you turn towards the door as you see Aki step out.

"Well? I'm innocent aren't I?" Power states lifting her handcuffs. "You figured that out already, so let me out of these will ya."

Himeno looked at Aki with a questioning look, "Is that really okay? If the devil girl ever kills a human, the blame would fall on you wouldn't it?"

Aki hands you the keys so you can start to uncuff Power.

"We're devil hunters. We'll use anything we can, be it devils or devilmans. But an enemy is still an enemy... you're just one more tool." Aki remarks, looking at Power. "I have no intention of making friends."

"Well damn, just like that? I can forget how cold-shouldered Aki can be towards devilmans and devils in general."You pondered.

There was a thick tension in the air after Aki's statements. You could tell Power and Aki did not like each other, let alone trust each other.

"Well, I guess we should be taking our leave, good luck with Power, Aki." You turn to Himeno, "It was nice meeting you, can't wait to work with you." You wave goodbye, leaving the hospital to head home.
