**Double update

Himeno and Aki went back to look for more pieces of Gun Devil flesh. As Aki was excavating the Devil, Himeno decided to bring up the team bonding idea.

"A newbie welcoming party?" Aki questions

"Yup!" Himeno exclaimed, " Division 4's never gotten together in one place, so let's eliminate our latest problem while bonding as a team."

"What problem?" Aki questioned, still examining the corpse for any gun devil remains.

"Yeah, the thing is... Kobeni and Arai say they are going to quit Public safety. I guess the incident with that eternity devil traumatized them. While we have y/n coming in, that won't be enough people... Plus, I'm pretty sure it's not just that they are scared of devils now. They are probably regretting how they tried to kill Denji."

"Didn't you try to kill him too, Himeno?"

"Yeh, but kids these days quit over something so small. If it's over drinks, we could apologize to Denji nice and quick... and pursue Kobeni and Arai to stay," she hums.

Aki chuckles, "You just want to drink, don't you?" Himeno chuckles in agreement. "Well," Aki states, turning to Himeno after finding the small piece, "If we're going drinking, it has to be this week."

"Huh, why?" Himeno questioned.

"Makima will be leaving for Kyoto next week to request assistance for Denji, as well as change some paperwork to transfer y/n as a devil hunter, and I want to go out drinking with Miss Makima. So if we are going to do it, we might as well do it this week."

"So honestly..." Himeno hummed, "What do you think Denji is? It sounded like the devil knew who Denji was, and I had never seen anything like the chainsaw form before... The biggest mystery is why Makima cares so much about him... and why she was so eager to change y/n to be a devil hunter. She said she quit a couple of years back, but I'm not sure if I should buy it."

Aki looked at her curiously.

"Makima normally travels all over, but she's been hanging around Tokyo lately. That's because Denji and y/n are here, right? It could be that she knows their secret... and could be why she forced y/n to become a devil hunter with us," Himeno spoke, huffing from her cigarette. "Shall we get her drunk and find out?"

-----------

You were cleaning your home when you received a call from Makima. You were hesitant to pick up because you feared she would bring up the one thing you wanted to leave behind. Nonetheless, you pick, fearing more what could happen if you did miss the call.

"Hello, y/n speaking."

"Hey y/n, just wanted to call and check in with you. You didn't give me a report back, so I was just wondering why I pay you if you are going to slack off on the Hayakawa squad."

You were annoyed and harshly responded, "Well, considering it's my day off, and the recruits sent off the report, I thought I didn't have to do anything. None of the things I'm doing right now are under my responsibilities as an engineer- a role you hired me specifically for. And unfortunately for you, that is out of my payroll. Feeling a bit exploited here, but hey, I'm still doing the job."

"Oh, someone is frustrated..." Makima giggled

"Yeh, I am frustrated; you said I would be out of harm's way, but somehow I end up stuck on the 8th floor of a hotel for what feels like days." you snapped.

"But you are safe, aren't you here talking with me..." Makima chirped. "Plus, not like you weren't able to handle that situation on your own... I know you're a devil hunter y/n, a strong one at that..."

You froze, the one thing you feared. How much did this woman know about you? Would she force you to stay longer? Would she try to get your mom involved? Before you can think of what to say next, your thoughts get interrupted by Makima.

"Y/n... this may come to you as a surprise, but I knew you had a devil contract since the day I met you. Is that what made you one of the top private devil hunters back in your homeland, being in contract with the forest devil?" Makima sneered.

"How do you know that?" you questioned, trying to hide the fact you were shocked.

"So I was right... that's good to know..." Makima smirked, "Out of the blue, you stopped devil hunting and continued living your life normally. I did extensive research on your past. I'll admit it was a bit difficult; you did a good job hiding your secret occupation. I want to know why you kept it from me."

You swallow the nerves you felt creeping on the back of your throat. "I just wanted to be an engineer, nothing to it..." you stayed quiet, trying to think of what you will say next carefully. "So what do you want? What do you get from knowing this about me? Do you think I'll be your dog?"

You only heard Makima giggle, "You funny y/n... your quite observant, aren't you."

"Best engineers have the best eyes when it comes to the little details, so I suppose your assessment is correct."

"Then you already put together that I want you as a devil hunter in Division 4."

You sighed; you know she would ask you this question. "If I deny your request, what will you do, hmm."

"Well, I can't do anything. I thought you came here for a change in your life, so it seems rather silly for you to go crawling back to your old life. If you wish to go back home like a chicken with no head, by all means, go back. My only request is for you to be a part of Division 4 and keep watch of Denji. As you know, devils are now starting to target him. I need people to protect him. I trust that you can do it well."

You thought about the offer Makima was putting on the table. While she was right, you wouldn't be crawling back to your old ways; you also didn't want to be a devil hunter. But then you thought about Denji and Power, the relationship you just started form and the life you were beginning to create down in Tokyo. While it wasn't safe, every day brought something different, and for once in your life, you started feeling as if you belonged. "Okay, Makima, I'll accept your deal, but I will need a pay raise... Is that all you want from me?"

"Ensure Denji isn't killed... Also, don't mention to the team that I hired you to look over Denji; for all they care, you are hired as a recruit." Makima spoke softly.

"Sure, I'll do that... But any particular reason why." you inquired, pacing around the room.

"No, I just don't want them worrying unnecessarily," she responded.

"Alright then, I'll catch you later Makima." You hung up the phone. You lay on your couch and sunk into it. "Yay!" you yelp sarcastically. I'm going to be a devil hunter once again. At least I'll be on the watch for Denji. It won't be safe, but this job was never secure to begin with. You reflected a bit; it was life allowing you to atone for your sins. The sin of leaving behind your siblings, or was it cursing you.
