"You alright?" The king asked his friend with shallow breaths.
"Y-yeah." The young man groaned. Caspian tried again to kick the gate that trapped them to no eval.
"It's hopeless." A man's voice ricocheted through the dark dungeon. "You'll never get out."
"Who's there?" Edmund asked the shadowed area where the voice came from.
"Nobody," The man sighed as Caspian walked forward cautiously. "Just a voice in my head."
As the Narnia king drew closer, the man stuck his head into the light. He had long, graying hair with a long beard to match. He was pale, like he hadn't gone out in years.
"Lord Bern?" Caspian asked, trying and failing to hide his shock. The older man furrowed his eyebrows.
"Perhaps once." He looked to the ground. "But I'm no longer deserving of that title."
Caspian looked back to Edmund whose face contorted in confusion.
"Is he one of the seven?" The brunette asked. Caspian sent a slight nod. He stepped forward and kneeled down.
"Your face.." Lord Bern trailed off. "You remind me of a king I once loved well."
"That man was my father." Caspian informed him softly.
"Oh, my lord!" The man's breathing began getting shallow. He moved to he knees. "Please forgive me!"
"No, please. Please." Caspian helped the man stand from the ground.
Horses neighed and Edmund perked up. He noticed a bared window too high to see through easily. So, with a running start, he grabbed a hold of the bars. Holding himself up, he watched as a wooden cart carried a group of men, women, and children.A little girl in a purple dress yelled for her mother. A man with curly black hair ran after the cart and grabbed a woman's hand. A soldier stopped the man and punched him across the face.
Daria, Lucy, and Eustace, along with many others, watched as this happened. Daria struggled against her restraints.
"Aslan! Those people!" She cursed.
"Mummy!" The girl ran after her father, stopping where he'd fallen.
"Stay with daddy!" The woman yelled back.
"Don't worry!" The man yelled. "I'll find you!"
Lucy sniffled and hid her face in her knees. Daria rubbed the girls back as a way to comfort her. It wasn't working, but Lucy appreciated the effort.Caspian joined Edmund at the window and together they watched as the soldiers pushed the crying, kidnapped people into boats.
"Where are they taking them?" Caspian turned to Lord Bern.
"Keep watching." Bern warned.
Thunder began to rumble and an eerie green mist appeared up through the ocean and circled the boat. Women were crying and children yelled in fear, these people must have known what was going to happen next.
The screaming grew louder as the mist grew closer, however, when it covered them, the screams stopped abruptly. When the mist disappeared, the boats were gone without a trace.
"What happened?" Caspian gaped in a mixture of shock and anger.
"It's a sacrifice." Lord Bern explained vaguely.
"W-where did they go?" Caspian looked back again, needing some answers to calm his raging mind.
"No one knows." Bern shook his head. Caspian and Edmund jumped down, walking towards the man.
"The mist was first seen in the east. Reports of fishermen and sailors disappearing out at sea. We lords made a pact to find the source of the mist to destroy it." The old man glanced at the ground. "They each set sail...but none came back."
Caspian and Edmund shared a glance and watched as the man walked around them.
"You see, if they don't sell you to the slave traders, you're likely to be fed to the mist." He informed them.
"We have to find Lucy." Edmund glanced to his friend. "And Daria, before it's too late."
