Anna Hall
It all seemed fishy to me too. So, I decided to investigate. After all, I'm a lawyer and I look for evidence. I saw that dad was busy talking to the guests so I sneaked into his office to find the truth. As I entered his office, I examined the drawers on his desk and saw that one of the drawers was locked. Why did she lock it? I searched for the key when a framed photo of Ri, dad, and I was knocked on the table by me, by mistake. There it was! The key. I, then, opened the drawer to see a few letters and photos inside. There were photos of only me with mom when I was born and the letters were from someone. I couldn't see who it was from since the name was scratched. But in the letter, it was written- 'How is Anna? Her fever reduced right? I wish I could see my daughter.' What??? Then in the next letter was dad's handwriting. It was written- 'Yes, she's fine now. I know. Once you return from Ohio, you can. Ok? It's hard but you were the one who said it will work. What will work?? The first letter for sure wasn't written by dad. Who are my 'parents now?
"Doing spy-work during your sister's party. Huh?" someone asked making me jump in my seat. It was Adam.
"Oh my god! Adam! Thank god, it's just you." I said relievingly.
"Sorry to have startled you. but what are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm searching for answers," I muttered as I closed the drawer.
"To what?" he asked.
"I just got to know from my aunt Lisa that no one in both families is blond," I stated.
"So?" he asked.
"So, it makes me wonder if I'm their child," I said.
"Anna, are you kidding me? You're blond because of some scientific reason. You never know." he said laughing.
"No Adam. There's something dad's been hiding all these years. Read these letters." I said and gave him the letters.
"Ok, Anna. Listen to me carefully. We'll ask your dad about this after the party. Ok? We can't ask him in front of all those people. That'll not be right. I promise I'll be with you then. Ok?" he asked me.
"Thank you. So much." I said hugging him.
"No problem. Let's go before everyone realizes we are missing," he said.
"Yeah," I said.
As we were going out, someone caught us. It was Aunt Lisa.
"Aunt Lisa?" I asked.
"Wait! This is 'THE AUNT LISA'?" Adam teased.
"Seriously why are you all..." she was saying when I spoke.
"Ok sorry, aunty," I said.
"It's fine. Who is this here?" she asked.
"This is uncle Tony's son, Adam," I said.
"Oh, it's nice to meet you again. The last time I saw you was when you were just born in the hospital," she said.
"It's nice to meet you too," he said.
"So, why are two coming out from your dad's office?" she asked.
"Uhh...nothing. We were just keeping something back." I lied.
"Oh really? Then why were you sneaking out like that?" she asked.
"Nothing at all. We got to go now. Please excuse us." I said.
"Oh my, Anna! Come back. I was just kidding." she said but Adam and I walked away from there.
"That was close!" I said as we came outside to the balcony.
"I know. Oh, look everyone is leaving. I think the party's over." he said pointing outside to the guests who were leaving.
"Yeah. Just a couple more minutes." I said sighing in relief.
***********
It took almost 30 minutes for everyone to leave. Ri and Ben went back to their house. They lived right next door so it wasn't much of a hassle. I went to dad to confront him about this issue but then Uncle Chad was right there.
"Anna? What are you doing here? And you too Adam?" Uncle Chad asked.
"Oh, we needed to talk to dad about something," I said.
"Oh ok. I'll go then. Good night dear. Good night Adam." he said.
"Good night uncle." Adam and I said in unison.
"So, what did you want to talk to me about?" dad asked.
"Dad, don't think of me as a bad daughter but why have you lied to me?" I asked him.
"About what?" he asked.
"I'm blond and no one in both the families is blond," I stated.
"What? No, your great-grandfather is..." he was saying when I cut him off.
"No, dad! Aunt Lisa told me that he was not. Why are you lying to me? Please tell me the truth." I said.
"Adam, can you please go? I need to talk with my daughter," he asked Adam.
"No! Whatever you tell, tell it in front of him. He's not going anywhere." I said holding his hand.
"Anna, I'll go," he said.
"No, Adam, you have to stay. Now tell me, dad." I said.
"Well, you are..." he started stuttering.
"Am I adopted?" I asked him.
"No. You're just..." he still couldn't find his words.
"What is it, dad? Stop stuttering, please." I begged him.
"Anna, the truth is you aren't mine and Riya's daughter by birth," he said. And that was the end of that sentence.
"What?" I asked in teary eyes and fell down when Adam caught me.
Oh my god! Poor Anna. How will she take in all this? Then wait...whose daughter is she?
