Part 2: Penn - nine

Sydney is awake before Penn.

It is a beautiful day in October.

The city shows so much joy, so many colours.

But Penn sees only shadows.

Penn has many things to think about.

The only way to do that is to drink.

It is nine, quite early.

But no one is going to interfere.

The hotel fridge is stocked with wine and spirits.

Penn does not even dress.

By now, the hotel knows his preferences.

Overnight his mood has changed to a low depression.

Penn feels low and glum.

He starts with a glass of wine.

He is saddened by his life and mother's death.

All his emotions are overturned.

The wine is good; it tastes dry.

Penn has had these dark thoguhts all his life.

He drinks pills for it.

He would be fine then suddenly fall.

A crash that makes him vulnerable and very melancholic.

The alcohol makes it worse.

In his head, he's died many times.

This time he will find his mother in heaven.

If he goes to heaven?

Penn starts to cry. What great sorrow!

He will not survive without her; he is desolate.

Penn fills his glass again.

Maybe he only has this one option.

Out of the window, Sydney lies in full force.

This city is his sanctuary.

Penn wouldn't want to die anywhere else.

He has found peace in such a beautiful view.

Penn does not usually pray.

Today he asks for one thing only,

'Lord, if you're listening, please take me to her.'

The tears are too many.

The whiskey he drinks up like water.

As he stands, he can feel the world turning.

He rushes to the bathroom.

He has no choice; he must die.

One by one, he drinks all of the pills.

He does not count them.

The pills are all of different colours.

He would do it even if he weren't drunk.

It is a suicide attempt.

Penn goes to lie on the bed.

Death will be just like falling asleep, they say.

He looks at the time.

And then he rereads the letter over.

His mother asked him to do this one thing.

He has let her down.

He reads the letter one more time.

Maybe he should have tried harder, be a man.

Death is coming on swiftly.

For a second, he closes his eyes.

But he does not fall asleep or become lifeless.

He rushes to the toilet.

The vomit comes on easily and quick.

Penn does not stop until he's sure he'll live.
