Katya's POV
Ferr crossed off the last thing on our to do list. We dedicate one day a week on a to do list. I drive and he runs the errands. I don't like walking around out in the open. I'm a paranoid old woman. I'm always strapped and if someone startles or less old at me the wrong way I'll probably unload a whole magazine on them.I have always been one to look over my shoulder but not one to be this paranoid. The incident in Russia affected me. I don't trust human kind.
"All done. Do you want me to buy you anything?" Ferrer studied me as I eased off the side of the road.
There's a black SUV also leaving the parking.
"Nah."
"Ice cream, chocolate...?"
"Diabetes, blood pressure..." I repeated what he tells me each time he finds me indulging my cravings. His deep stupid laughter made me laugh. "I don't get it Ferr. We have spent almost all our lives at war with each other, bickering and arguing only for us to finally buckle down now. I don't get it."
"I do." He placed his hand on my knee. "This will sound weird but remember when we were on the plane? When Terrence was repeated crashing and I was trying to resuscitate him?"
I can never forget that. "Yeah?" I kept my right hand on the wheel and the other rested on the door with the open window. It's a hot afternoon.
The black SUV is still steady on our trail.
"I have never wanted our family to be more together than at that point. I made a silent vow to make it work if Terrence survived it. In a way, I think it was a blessing because the three of us are in one house like it should have been from the moment he took his first breath in this world."
"It's perfect Ferr. Thank you." I switched hands to hold his. I brought it to my lips and kissed one of the blessed and skilled hands that saved our son. If my son's father wasn't a doctor I would have buried Terrance that night. "I love you."
"I love you too Katya."
I glanced at the rearview mirror. "Buckle up boo!" I made a sharp U-turn and drove past the SUV. Unlike our truck, this one has dark tinted windows and I can't see the driver. I stepped on the gas just after and I noticed it making a U-turn too. "Come on! We were having a moment! Ferr, shotgun."
He reached to the back seat and grabbed a shotgun. "If that bastard overtakes us, shoot them."
"Yes ma'am." He corked the gun and he held it steady. The SUV is steadily accelerating. I need to get off the busy town street. I also sped up testing the limit of the old truck. I hooted at everyone to get out of the way. As soon as we left town, it was so on. I lowered the window completely. The SUV tried to overtake but an oncoming vehicle sent it back and in the struggle to steady their car, we lost them. I sped all the way home watching that we weren't followed.
We parked the car in the garage. Usually we leave it outside but we don't want anyone knowing we live here.
"Are you okay?" I asked. He out the shotgun back.
"I'm good. You?"
"Why would someone be following us?" I asked him. "Terrence is dead. His enemies got what the wanted quote and quote. So?"
We have tried to keep the secret that Terrence us alive quiet.
"I have an idea. Don't call me out on it." He walked into the house. I followed. He marched straight for Terr's room. He stood in front of our son.
"Are you okay?" Terrence asked him and then looked at me then his father. I love where their relationship is at. These things take patience just like Kei said. It's like Nick and Marcelle. It had taken that long for them to get along smoothly.
