OLIVE GREEN EYES scanned the letter in front of him in boredom. Beside him was a messy pile of opened envelopes and beside his desk was a chest overflowing with more shallow or exaggerated confessions.
The door clicked open and a fair woman entered. She had the same green eyes as the man. Her dress was a bright orange with yellow ruffles. A small cloud was hovering above her long, ginger hair she tied in a neat braid.
"Camilo mijo, have you picked someone yet? You've been here all day!" Pepa sighed, setting down the tray with a large bowl of chickpea stew.
For years, she had been bugging him to find someone to settle down with. She and Felix weren't getting any younger and at the age of 27, Camilo still didn't have a novia while everyone else had someone.
Isabela married at the age of 25, to a lovely musician named Carmen. Luisa was seeing a dashing, muscly hunk who delivered many, heavy sacks of foreign trades to their village. Dolores had three children already (and if you stare for a little longer, you would notice a small baby bump again), Mirabel is pregnant with her first child and Antonio has been dating around since he started high school.
Camilo was really the only one who was still single and Pepa grew impatient with each passing moment of idleness. Just yesterday, she shoved a whole chest of love letters, proposals and confessions in his face, telling him to at least consider one of the many fine ladies who already made the first move.
Camilo sighed in return, combing his long fingers through his curls. "I don't know, mami... All these are.. nice... but none of them interest me."
He gestured to the pile with a grimace. If he received the letters at a younger age, his ego would've inflated by the flattery women showered him with. But now he was older and felt he had better things to do than be cheesy with a person until the day he dies.
He was fine with his life right now. He had a happy family, a great job in the carpentry company his papá founded for the village, and an awesome group of amigos. What else could he need?
He's only really doing this to make his mami happy.
Pepa's eyes widened, "I saw some letters from guys too. If you want-"
"No no! It's not that I like guys, mami. It's just... I'm not interested. They all want to impress me with words. It's tiring to read through." He finished, tossing an unopened envelope on the stack of letters.
Curious, his mom picked it up and read it. As she read, Camilo fixed his desk and started eating. A shot of energy ran through his body as he ate his first bite. Now this was true love. Food.
Silence settled on the room for a few minutes as each minded their own business.
"Oh mijo! I think you'll like this one. She's straight to the point." Pepa smiled, sliding over the folded paper she kept rereading.
He made a face, upset she interrupted his eating. Setting down the spoon, he gingerly took the letter and opened it.
Surprisingly, it was very short, unlike the 2-3 page letters he had to read through a while ago.
Camilo Madrigal,Greetings from town. I'm not so very good in writing letters, much less one for confession so please bear with me.
We met when I first came to your college to give my father his lunch. Since then, I would often pass by to exchange small talk with you and your friends during lunch. You intrigue me and I want to get to know you more. Write back when you can.
Eliana Pérez
He raised a brow. He remembered her. She was pretty, with long, silky black hair and big, gray eyes. But she was reserved. Talking only when spoken to and was content with listening to him and his friends talk and have playful banters when they met on the hallways.
Camilo wanted to decline, thinking about how awkward their interactions might become. But when his eye caught the chest full of more letters, he suddenly looked forward to writing back to the awkward girl.
If he considers her, he doesn't have to waste another day in his room, trying not to cringe from the "poetic" love letters, while his mami can be happy with the thought of him actively trying to do something about his love life. It's a win-win.
"Yeah. I'm ok with her." He smiled at his mom, taking note of the rainbow forming on top of her head.
