Christopher's POV:
I hastened towards her room for answers- answers to why this war has fallen on us all. I knocked on the door and when I entered, I found her in a calm state with Azalea and Mariana by her side. I did not waste any time as I began asking questions immediately.
“Jamille, do you have any idea why those men were after your brother?”
“Not that I know of.”
I turned to Mariana.
“You were with him before we were all attacked. Do you have any idea why they would want him child?”
“Before we were chased, Sir Garrett and I were in the library. I was crying because I was beaten for ruining the supper stew so Sir Garrett was reading some stories to me.”
“What sort of story may I ask?”
“It was about some magical land with a powerful king and beautiful queen.”
“Do you perhaps remember the title?”
“I am sorry your majesty, but I do not.”
I sighed in frustration, but seeing how it scared her, I patted her head gently to reassure her. I turned to the door guard and ordered him to summon Hector over. Even if I could not figure anything out, my advisor surely could.
Azalea took my arm and led me to the corner of the room and started whispering the questions on her mind.
“What happened in the manor?”
“The men caught Mariana and wanted to barter with us. The strange thing was that the leader only wanted Garrett-not even me.”
“Why would they not want the king of Cardinia?”
“That is precisely what I am wondering.”
I then showed her the letter I received.
“We have to solve this mystery fast or our kingdom will fall. If we do not even know who we are dealing with, we are at a big disadvantage.”
“We will get through this together, do not worry Christopher.”
A rush of footsteps echoed through the hallway until it reached the room. Standing at the doorway was Mitch.
“What’s wrong?” Azalea inquired.
“Your majesties, there is something you might want to see.” He panted.
The three of us rushed to the archives room where we found a body lifeless on the floor.
“Sir Hector.” Azalea gasped.
“Judging by the state of the body and blood, he was murdered approximately before dawn. We did find a note in his hand.”
Mitch handed me the parchment that read yet another threat.
Do not interfere with me work or this will become of you.
-M
“Is that blood?” Azalea looked at the “M” revoltingly.
“Yes, the murderer signed in his victim’s blood.”
I stared at the body of my tutor.
“Search his coat-pocket” I ordered.
One of the guards at the door followed my demand and found a folded bloody parchment paper which has been clearly ripped out of a book. I opened it to only find it to be the cover page of a manuscript.
A knock came at the door and a guard came in with some news. There was a servant girl who was on her way to deliver a message to me but she was murdered before she could get it to me. The guard handed me the message which read:
Dear Christopher,
Come to the study room; I have discovered something that might interest you.
-Hector
A sudden thought came into my mind.
“Azalea, did you drink or eat anything before you returned back to our room?”
She thought about it for a while before answering me.
“Now that I think about it, a servant girl did bring me a beverage while I was searching the archives yesterday. It was something I have never tasted before.”
I had a good supposition on what she drank and sent for the drink. When it arrived I had her take a sip.
“This is the exact drink!” She exclaimed.
“It is as I hypothesized. Azalea, this drink is an aphrodisiac tonic. Some Cardinian couples drink this before they decide to conceive a child. It is a special tonic created from an herb grown only in the north side of Cardinia. I was wondering why you wanted to make love to me all of a sudden.”
Her face blushed a bright red.
“What kind of repulsive person would want to give me that?”
“Someone who did not want me to leave the room and see what Hector wanted to show me. This “M” wanted-at all cost- to keep me preoccupied with something else while he killed Hector.”
I looked at the bloody torn cover. I whispered to myself.
“The question is what The Fire Ruby has to do with Hector.”
