⇸ |23| a mother's love

There were small moments in Narcissa's life where the tiniest things would drift through her mind and remind her of Andromeda. Things that were once so simple, but now so heartbreaking as the memories flowed through her mind. While they weren't always unwelcome they often left Narcissa with mixed feelings, feelings of guilt and anger. Feelings that she never particularly liked to feel.

As she stood in the kitchen of the Donovan home, wrist deep in bread dough, she felt one of these moments drift over her. The feeling of the bread she was kneading beneath her hands taking her to such a simpler time.

"You're doing it all wrong, Narcissa." Andromeda laughed, her smile bright in the dimly lit kitchen as house elves fluttered about around them.

Huffing the young blonde stubbornly crossed her arms as she wiped the sweat from her forehead, leaving behind a smear of flour.

Andromeda Black smiled, pulling back her curly dark hair, as she took a damp towel from the counter and wiped away the flour from her sister's face, "Here let me show you."

"I don't even understand why we're doing this," Narcissa grumbled beneath her breath, the whine evident in her voice.

Andromeda merely smiled as she began to knead the bread, her fingers nimble and strong against the dough, "It's good to learn new things, we shouldn't always rely on magic, Cissa."

Huffing the young girl sat stubbornly on a stool watching as her older sister worked, "Well why not? We're witches, aren't we? Why shouldn't we use the magic we have, mother and father would be so disappointed if they found out we were doing mundane muggle activities."

She watched as her older sister stilled, her fingers no longer working the dough, and at the time Narcissa hadn't a clue what she had said that may have upset Andromeda.

Without saying anything Andromeda gestured for Narcissa to join her and she took her sisters small hands in her own as she helped her knead the dough properly.

"There's a certain satisfaction that comes from doing things on your own," Andromeda stated quietly, "a peacefulness as you go through the process, as you put in the work and love, and when you've accomplished everything you've set out to do it's an amazing feeling. It's a magic all it's own, Narcissa. You might not understand what I'm saying now, but I hope one day you will."
