It had been a bit over a week since Hogwarts had released the students for Christmas Break and nearly a week and a half since Narcissa had last spoken to Cathal. The look on his face as she asked him to leave her in that alleyway still had her heart aching with pangs of sadness.

She had been trying to keep her mind from wandering to it, but the fact that the soiree had her utterly bored wasn't helping in the slightest.

The ballroom of the Malfoy Manor was all elegant marble and pristine white, accented with decorative golden hues for the Christmas Eve festivities.

Narcissa stood off to the side, a crystal glass of some expensive drink clutched in her hand as Amadeus Avery droned on, his hands gesticulating wildly as he spoke. Keeping a smile on her face she nodded along with what he said as her eyes roamed the room looking desperately for some kind of escape.

Everyone was decked out in the best their wardrobes had to offer, designs from the greatest in the wizarding world of fashion adorning their bodies. Narcissa herself wore an elegant dark green gown that fell off her shoulders, cinched her waist, and flowed into beautiful rivulets of fabric that were charmed to shimmer and sparkle every time she moved. Her hair was pinned elegantly at the nap of her neck in an intricate bun, loose curls falling out to frame her sharp features.

She had never looked more beautiful, yet she had never felt worse.

She clutched the delicate glass in her hand as Amadeus Avery continued to babble on about some topic he found absolutely invigorating and was planning to invest into.

Surprise surprise.

Her heart ached slightly knowing that Andromeda would have swooped in with some excuse to save her about ten minutes ago. Clearing her thoughts of Andromeda, Narcissa caught sight of Lucius and while he wasn't exactly the person she wanted in that moment, he'd have to do.

"Would you excuse me Amadeus," Narcissa politely interjected, the plastered smile never leaving her lips, "it looks like Lucius just arrived and I can't leave my date all by himself, I'm afraid my mother would never forgive me."

Amadeus chuckled slightly, saying his goodbyes and muttering something about young love as she made her way to the familiar blond.

She reached for his arm, a smile on her lips, but recoiled as he hissed in pain and quickly pulled his arm from her grip, "Are you okay?" Narcissa asked grabbing for him again, but he kept out of her reach.

Eyes darting around the room, Lucius took her by the hand and led her to a quiet corner, his smile unnerving her.

"I have something to show you." Lucius stated quietly, leaving Narcissa to furrow her brows in confusion. What could he possibly have to show her right now?
