Five years later, Sofia sat on her bed in the nursery. She took a deep breath in and started talking to herself, "okay, Sofia, you're about the get your gift. The thing that'll make you special apart from everyone else."
She took another deep breath in and her eyes fell on the old family picture from awhile ago that sat on the dresser in the nursery. She stood up and walked over to the dresser to get a better look, despite not really being able to see the top of the dresser, she could still see the picture.
The photo showed her family happy and she rarely saw most of them smile. She assumed the man in yellow was her quiet Tío Camilo. But she couldn't see her great-uncle Bruno in the photo however. Her eyes fell on a certain girl in the picture. The girl didn't look familiar to Sofia. Where was she now? Nobody had ever pointed this picture out to her, nor did she ever really pay attention to it until now.
She heard a gentle and quiet knock on the nursery door.
"Come in!" Sofia answered, not taking her eyes off of the girl in the picture.
Camilo opened the door. "Hola," his voice was soft and gentle, just like it always was.
Sofia still didn't take her eyes off of the picture as she greeted her uncle, "hola, Tío Camilo."
He sat on her bed, not really saying anything for a bit. "What are you looking at?"
"Tío Camilo," she looked back at him, "who is this girl in this picture?" Sofia turned back to look at the picture, tilting her head to the side a bit.
He blinked and patted the spot next to him. Sofia sat next to him. He pulled her close and gently took the photo from her hands. He saddened.
Sofia tilted her head to the side again, curious. "Tío Camilo, are you okay?"
"Mira..."
"Who?" Sofia asked, tilting her head to the other side.
Camilo sighed. "Mirabel..."
"Hm." Sofia hummed.
Camilo mumbled stuff, which is usually how he spoke, but this time, she found it a little annoying.
"Tío Camilo. I need you to tell me more." Sofia said. For a five year old, she was pretty insistent and she was smart, too. She wouldn't fall for any lies that an adult would normally tell a kid.
"She was your first cousin, once removed," he mumbled loud enough for her to hear.
Sofia looked at the picture again. "What happened to her?"
"No one really knows."
Sofia paused. "What was she like?"
"Supportive and kind."
Sofia gently took the picture back from her uncle's hands. "She looks about the same age as you in this picture," Sofia observed.
"She was just a few months younger than I."
Sofia nodded. "How old were you in this picture?"
"15, almost 16."
"So... did she, like, go missing, or something?" Sofia asked.
Camilo shook his head, looking away.
Sofia tilted her head as she looked at her uncle. "Tío Camilo, you can tell me."
