You stood, face to face. The Golden Guard was nervous, you could tell.

"So? Your proposition?" he asked.

"I was thinking, about an alliance. I can slip in anywhere without being noticed, and if no on knew I was working for you..." you gestured towards him. "Then it could be largely beneficial."

He thought for a moment. "What's in it for you? Why would you help us?"

"Hmm. I do not wish for payment, rather... a favour every time I aid you." you said, pocketing the comic.

"Fine. Maybe. But, I still have one question..." he started.

"Go on..." you prompted, this was beginning to waste your time.

"What type of magic was that? The type you used to open that... weird portal thing."

You sighed. "It's my own magic. I am the only one who wields it on the Boiling Isles."

You still stood, meters apart.

You shrugged. "How about a small sparring match, as a kind of initiation?"

The Guard readied himself, his staff pointed at your chest.

You pushed it to the side casually, conjuring two swords instead.

"A spar with these, you nutter." you tutted.

He looked at you, concerned. Still, he took one of the swords, swinging it in his grasp. He set aside his staff, still at reaching distance.

"Ready?"

"Ready."

You swung into action as soon as he spoke, dipping low and swiping his legs with the flat side of the sword, sweeping him off his feet.

You laughed, sword pointed at his neck.

"C'mon, Mr. Guard- not giving up already?" you said, mockingly.

He grunted, trying to bat your sword away with his. You stood back and allowed him to get back up.

He swung first this time, you parried the blow, sending his sword flying.

You could sense his bewilderment.

Here you were, a strange masked girl and the Golden Guard, sparring in an alleyway.

He lunged for the sword, grabbing it and swinging himself towards you.

You dropped your sword, spreading your arms.

"Let's even the odds, shall we?" you sneered.

He launched himself towards you, swinging violently.

Swiftly, you dodged, jumping to avoid low swings, ducking to avoid high ones.

All the while, you were smiling behind the mask.

The Golden Guard, still unsuccessful, found himself smiling, though he didn't know why.

It was like two dancers, swiftly moving from side to side, over and under.

Finally, he too dropped his sword. "Fine. I guess I can't beat you today."

"I could teach you to, if you like? Sparring is handy, when magic isn't available."

Why were you offering him training?

Maybe you pitied his skills, you could already sense the lack of magic in him. He needed to be able to use a sword, if he lost his staff.

"O-ok, I guess." he replied, unsure.

"Meet me each night on the roof of this building, just as the sun sets. That shall be our sparring 'arena'." you instructed.

You walked past him, the swords turning to dust.

THE GOLDEN GUARDS POV:

As she walked away, his eyes widened.

That was some warrior.

And, she's going to teach me her ways.

Wow.
