It had been a few hours after Carl's surgery, and as I sat in the chair outside the bedroom door barely staying awake I stewed in my worry.
"You should sleep, I'll wake you up if anything-"
"I'm fine Shane."I mumbled not fooling anyone,"I'm not even tired."
He sighed and I was lifted up and down onto his lap,"That's bullshit."
I straightened myself up,"Its hot in here."
He rolled his eyes,"I was under the assumption you were a southern girl."
Smiling just a little I hoisted myself up from his lap,"Let's walk outside."
He stood and took hold of my hand just as Hershel walked out of the room.I bit down on my lip studying his face he nodded for us to follow him out to Rick and Lori. I watched as they stood up, braced for any news.
Hershel broke out in a smile,"He seems to have stabilized."
Lori let out a jubilant sob and Rick hugged the older man, the weight seemed to have lifted off of everyone they were just as relieved as I was. At that moment reality hurtled back to us as Hershel reminded us of the fact that Patricia still was oblivious to Otis's death.
"I'll go with you, to tell her."Rick volunteered following Hershel back inside. All at once the others followed in after. I glanced up at Shane.
"We should give them some space.... maybe walk around the perimeter?"
He nodded and started walking. As we walked it stayed silent, I stared out into the field and smiled just a little ,starting to daydream back to when I used to run through similar fields as a child. Something any children still living right now won't be able to experience without the addition of fear and zombies. Before long my mind wandered off to revel in the fact that I probably won't be able to have my own children because of the fact that the dead were walking.
"What are you thinkin' about?" Shane nudged his shoulder into mine.
"How my life long dream of being a mother has been ripped to shreds. " I sighed. He frowned and took in the sight of the house as we continued to walk, just to avoid my hard gaze There was nothing to say. After walking a few more yards in silence, I decided to bring up the elephant in the room."You and Lori."
He turned his eyes darted back to me,"What about me and Lori?"
"That's what I'd like to know." I stated my lips in a straight line my eyes not breaking from his.
"She thought..we thought that Rick was dead.I thought you were dead." He defended himself.
I only nodded staying quiet for a few minutes evaluating how I felt. "You had reasonable doubt . Beside the point, we weren't even together. It shouldn't matter."
"You're not upset?"
"Shane I'm furious. However, we are two adults and you were free to do what you pleased."
He sighed and just shook his head,"I am sorry. I love you, Abigail."
I nodded once,"But if you ever do something like that again I swear to God ill rip your balls off and feed 'em to the walkers."
He smiled and nodded,"If I ever did something like that Ill willing hand over my balls."
That derived a laugh out of me, and in a time of a few sporadic laughs and such tremendous stress the laugh went on and on until he was laughing and continued until neither of us remembered what we were laughing at.That lead to me running off and him chasing behind as I shrieked and giggled until I was caught in his grip and pinned against the oak tree. Shane leaned his forehead against mine and pressed his body into mine."You look beautiful in the moonlight Miss.Lee....."
