It was a game, and Midoriya had wanted to win.
Izuku had woke up in a random room.
Everything in the room was white, the walls, the counters, the floor, everything. The brightness of it all caused him to squint.
Where am I? He thought, Heaven?
He stared blankly at the walls, trying to remember how he got here. His eyes moved over to a mirror. In his reflection, he saw that he was wrapped in bandages that were the same blinding white as the rest of the room. Pain and memories suddenly shot through him.
A laugh escaped him, but he stopped when his lungs began to feel like he had inhaled fire itself.
No, why would I be in heaven? I tried to kill myself. I would probably be in hell if I died.
His eyes scanned the room once more, this time stopping at a calendar. He read the date. School had started. High school had started, and it was a good month into the school year too.
He sighed. And to think he had been so excited to go to UA just a few weeks before.
Izuku decided to wait for someone to walk through the door as he lied on the bed. He waited for the other parts of his plan to come together.
It was peaceful. Too peaceful. He fell asleep, and he dreamt...

"Izuku. ."
"Izuku."
His eyes flickered open, and he sat up. The ceiling wasn't white anymore.
He looked around and saw himself lying on the floor of his own room. Did someone take me home? He thought as he stood up. Then, he gasped.
He saw himself. Another Izuku. The other Izuku got up from his bed and went through him like he was a ghost.
He was confused. Something about this... it was familiar. It was something he wanted to forget. Looking around the room, he found a clue. A calendar was stuck onto the wall, out of place next to the All Might posters. The last day of middle school was circled with a thick, black marker.
He laughed. His chest didn't hurt.
Izuku then realized what was going on: he was dreaming. He was dreaming of the incident that left him in that miserable, white room.
He closed his eyes tightly and muttered to himself, "Wake up, wake up. Please wake up."
Slowly opening his eyes once more, he saw himself walking to school. The jeers seemed to replay over and over in his mind like a broken record.
"Quirkless loser."
"Mistake."
"Die."
