Something told me that this might not end well. I should've known better than to trust them. Maybe it's because I never had anyone to count on and they were there. They were there putting forth the effort to win me over. But that's how betrayal starts. Isn't it?
Prologue
She told me to run. My mother told me to run. I didn't know where to go. Where are all the men? I didn't know what they were for but they're always around. Where's father? All I heard was fighting down the hall. Echoes of flesh against flesh and grunts. I ran into the secret compartment in my room after my mother pushed me. I didn't understand the gravity of the situation. Were we playing hide and seek? No. This is different. I closed the door to the compartment and ran down the secret tunnel to my hiding spot that I found while seeking out hidden treasures.
I curled up in the darkest corner I could find.I looked around me at my toys, deciding whether or not to start playing with them, when I heard a shout. . A deep voice yelled, echoing down the tunnel. Then I heard a terrible scream sounding like it came from my mother.
I hid my face in my legs, not moving, hardly breathing when I heard the door opening to the tunnel. Hearing footsteps I continued to not move or make a sound.
Who is this? I wondered. My hiding spot was tucked away out of view of the entrance. Peeking out I saw shoes and looked up the length of the man, trying to catch a glimpse of his face but couldn't because of him being turned away. I frowned as he kept progressing forward away from my hiding place.
A few minutes went by and I heard him walking back to the entrance to my room and heard the door shut. I feared I had to wait longer but decided to sneak back to the door and peek out.
No one I could see was in my room so I crawled out and put my hand in something wet. I looked down and saw red. Blood. My eyes widened in fear following the trail of blood leading to my mother laying in a pool of blood with a knife sticking out of her chest.
Her labored breathing made my heart stop, ice filled my veins, matching the tempo of my heart as it pounded inside my chest. I crawled quickly to her and lifted her head on my lap, ignoring the blood covering my dress. Her auburn hair had come undone from the intricate style, making it look as though she had fought her attacker. It fell around us, blood was beginning to gather underneath us, pooling in her hair.
"Darling," she whispered, "you must run and never come back. My little wildflower, don't come back. Save yourself."
"Momma.. don't leave me. What am I supposed to do?" I ask with tears running down my cheeks.
Blood sputtered in her mouth as she struggled to speak, "you run, come up with a different name and never tell anyone who you are."
"I love you momma.." I said quietly.
She raised her hand to touch my cheek, smearing her blood on it. "As I love you." Her hand drops down and she stops breathing.
I look toward the door to the hallway and decide to run back in where I came from and down the tunnel leading out of my home.
I didn't look back.
Chapter 1
Now
I peered around the corner of a tall building in the alleyway, searching for the man who had been tailing me. He had been in dark clothes and his hoodie shadowing his face.
I couldn't spot him anywhere so I went back to go deeper into the alley when he dropped down in front of me. I snarled and my fangs dropped out of my gums, grabbing my blade from its sheath. I went on the attack.
