Chapter 3
I never should have come here.
I walked the path back to where I've been staying before I met my mates, checking behind me every so often at random intervals to make sure no one had followed me. I walked past the entrance to the empty building and circled around making sure I wasn't followed.
I ran up the steps after entering and found the only room with a door and lock on it, shutting and locking it behind me. I dropped my belongings down on the floor next to the makeshift bed and sighed.
Muttering under my breath as I laid down on it, covering my face with my arm.
I took a short nap but I could feel a disturbance in the building. I couldn't decide if it was another homeless person or someone I should take out. I made sure no one followed me. I thought to myself. Sitting up I listened for any sounds of movement and heard nothing.
I stood and grabbed my blade from the bag I took from the warehouse before I had left. Moving slowly and quietly towards the door, I pressed my ear to it listening for any odd sounds.
I couldn't hear anything so I quietly opened the door after unlocking it and peeked out through the crack. Looking from one side and then the other after opening the door a bit more. I sped across to another opening near my door after shutting it and climbed into the rafters, leaning down watching and waiting for any kind of movement. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a shadow move along the corridor heading to my room. I get ready to jump down with my blade in my hand and my fangs descended. As the shadow closed in, I jumped down grabbing a hair full with my free hand, jerking the person's head back and placing my blade to their throat. They slammed my back into the wall and I grunted from the force of it, slicing a little along their neck to give them warning. They soon froze with their hands outstretched in front of them.
"Penelope, stop." A rough voice said. It took a moment to place the voice with my blade against their throat but it didn't take me long to figure it out.
Ragnar.
"Ragnar?! What the hell are you doing?" I drop down from his shoulders and put my blade away. "I could have killed you, again. How did you find me?" My fangs retracted as he turned around to face me. The burn on his jaw was almost completely healed.
"I followed your scent. I'm good at hunting." He shrugs a shoulder.
"Well, what are you doing here?" I turn away and walk into my room dropping my blade onto the bed and look out the window from the side.
"I came to bring you back." He said low.
I glanced at him, "why? I hurt you. Twice." I looked away from him and crossed my arms, feeling slightly guilty for hurting him again.
I watched him out of the corner of my eye push his fingers through his hair before he let out a gruff sigh. "Because you belong with us. We are your mates and we're meant to protect you. You don't deserve to live in this dump and not have someplace safe to live and you won't have to look over your shoulder constantly. Come back and we can start over." He said.
I snort. "This was a safe place until you followed me. Now I don't know if someone followed you to get to me. I don't trust either one of you and clearly I can take care of myself. You guys just show up out of the blue and tell me you're my mates and I'm just randomly supposed to trust you? Put my life in your hands? Please." I watched the person walking along the street until they turned a corner of another building.
Ragnar sighed in frustration. He turned away, showing me his back. "Pen, Liam left something out about mates."
I turned my head to look at him.
