The next morning Demelza and I sat with the children playing with them outside. Ross was readying the horses for us to leave, Demelza and Prudie would be watching the children. I blew them a kiss and part from them, making my way over to Ross. I hug him and kiss his cheek before mounting and riding to Tregothnan, meeting Caroline and Dwight on the way. I entered on the arm of my friend. Hugh was waiting for us, we curtsied. Dwight and Hugh shook hand as I daren't glance towards him."Welcome. Do come in."
"Shall we adjourn briefly?" Dwight suggested breaking the awkwardness.
"Yes, thank you. We continued on in, Dwight and Hugh left us in the drawing room with refreshment and a chance to talk.
"Are you quite right, my dear?" Caroline asked " You look a little peaky?" she inquired as I was having another one of my dizzy spells.
"I'm just..whoa." I flop forward a little but stop myself "I'm fine, I've just been having these dizzy spells recently." I blinked the feeling away as it passed
"I will..." I cut her off
"No. i'm fine. I'm sure it will pass." I assure her. Dwight and Hugh return not long after and tea is served.
"Dr Enys, I trust you'll have my nephew in perfect health by the election." Lord Falmouth joined and greeted my friend with a heavy hand on the shoulder "I need a vigorous young candidate to oust Basset's man." Then moved around to Hugh.
"Perfect Health is difficult for any to attain and I don't think Hugh is likely to achieve it. However, I hope second best will be sufficient for the electors of Truro." Dwight answers as I shift uncomfortably still refusing to meet Hugh's gaze which i felt on me.
"Imagine if you did attain the seat." Caroline wonders wistfully.
"I've attained so much already for which I am eternally grateful." My eyes flicker up and away at his response.
"My Lord." I cleared my throat "I was hoping you would consider a truce between your self and Sir Francis" He looked at the others then back at me
"A truce?"
"So you no longer need fight each other for the seat but unite to find a new candidate who would have the peoples best interests at heart?" I hoped, the election would run a lot smother and George could be out of power if they stood united.
"Well, that would make perfect sense." Hugh agreed with me
"But for one fact. The arrogant young peer would certainly not compromise." I stood gracefully
"Quite the opposite I believe. My Lord forgive me but I have had the pleasure of attending both yours and Sir Francis' company. He lately said so to me." Lord Falmouth chuckled
"You ladies are so easily prayed upon. I recollect it was Basset who enabled Warleggan's entry into the house in the first place. When you've been in the world as long as I, you know a conniving rough when you see one." he countered
"In all fairness. I am more that just a lady. I am a woman of colour and a life well lived, you may have your experiences but so have I. I see and hear what many think I shouldn't or I don't . What I see is that you and Sir Francis were already working together without even knowing it. You could again if you so wish. All I ask is that you think on it, really think on it. I know that the two of you wants the same things deep down." There was a stunned silence.
"Very well, leave me to ponder." he left us and I sat back down
