Chapter Thirty Nine: January

During the month of January, Draco and I sent a letter to his mum about my magic and he and I spent time going through my old books to find out anything about my new wand's powers. Mrs. Malfoy expressed concern and some disappointment that I used ancient magic, despite being with Charlie, but she insisted I speak to Professor Moody as he would have more experience with unusual abilities. Draco refused to go with me and I understood why so I brought Ron with me during one of our free periods to the professor's office. After he finished class with Fred's year, we went in. Before I got inside, Fred gave me a cute kiss on my cheek as he left. We were rather fond of each other.

Inside, Ron sat at one of the desks in the front row as I explained my situation to the ex-Auror. He seemed intrigued by the concept of my hair and examined my wand. For the first time, someone who wasn't me tried to use it and it refused to function. The professor was nearly thrilled by it. My wand would only obey me and that in itself was a double-edge sword. It was my only defense since it was my only immediate use for modern magic. If I ever lost my wand, I could be rendered helpless. With my consent, I allowed the professor to cut my hair up to my waist and he was going to experiment how it would work and he would inform me on it's magical properties in the future.

As the snow began to melt, I trimmed my own bangs and kept the trimmings for my own experiment. During Potions, Draco and I split the trimmings to use. I put it in my cauldron as the first ingredient and Draco added the trimmings last. Both potions were exponentially potent and we were given full points for our competence. I hadn't heard any progress from Mad-Eye Moody and my wand was definitely stronger. After another inspection by the headmaster and Mr. Ollivander, it was deemed fair and I was granted continued use of it for the tournament.

During the last week of January, Salem delivered a letter to me from Cedric. That weekend, he wanted to take me to Hogsmeade and I wrote back to him, accepting his invitation. Draco wasn't too keen on hearing about it but I told him it had to do with the Second Task and I was desperate to receive help. He allowed it since neither of us could last three seconds after the Golden Egg was open with the high pitched screeching.

I decided to visit Charlie with my egg since the Second Task was quickly approaching. At this point, I knew he was staying with Hagrid. I knocked on the front door and Charlie answered it. This time, he quickly pulled me in and I sat on the armchair with him.

"Ivy, you've been coming here a lot," he said.

"You've been here a lot. Where's Hagrid? I haven't seen him since the Yule Ball," I asked.

          "He's hiding," he said.

"Because of the article?" I asked.

He nodded and noticed my egg, "I can't help."

"Charlie, I've gotten nowhere with it. Can you at least listen to it?" I pleaded.

         "Alright," he sighed.

I opened it and Charlie quickly closed it after several seconds. My ears were ringing and I apologized to him.

"It's no creature I've ever heard," he said.

"All the eggs are like this," I admitted.

"I'm sorry I can't be more help," he said and examined the eggshell if it held any more clues.

"No, thank you for being here. Do you know when Hagrid will return?" I asked.

"Tomorrow night," he answered and handed the egg to me.
