Late 1999

"If he puts one foot out of line, or you feel uncomfortable in any way, call me and I'll come pick you up," Steph said, arms crossed. Even though I was older than her, she acted like my older sister sometimes. She just wanted what was best for me.

I rolled my eyes, as if annoyed by the protectiveness, but I was touched that she cared so much. "I'll be fine, Steph. Adam is a gentleman. If I want to come home, he'll happily bring me back. And, I'm very sure it won't be necessary."

I was going on a date with a friend from work. I knew him as Adam, but the fans knew him as Edge. He was my goofy backstage buddy, and honestly shocked me when he asked me out.

Steph sighed. "I just don't want to see you hurt again, okay?"

After Shawn left, I was devastated. I didn't blame Steph for never wanting to see that happen again.

"You won't." I gave her a reassuring smile, squeezing her hand as an extra measure.

The doorbell rang.

"That's him!" I smoothed down my hair and dress. My hair was in its signature curls, and I was wearing a simple black dress. I didn't want to look overdressed, but I at least wanted to be presentable. "Do I look okay?"

Steph pulled my hands away from my head and held them. "You look fine. Go get your man, I'll be with Scottie."

I took a deep breath to calm my nerves before opening the door. This would be the first time I had been on a date in at least a year and a half.

Part of me never believed I would go on another.

Adam sucked in his breath as he took in the sight of me. "You look... amazing."

I tried to hide my smile, but it could have been seen from Mars. "Thank you. You look nice, yourself. I, uh, need to put Scottie to bed really quick. Would you like to come in and say hi?"

"Sure," he answered, stepping in after me. He hadn't seen Scottie for a while, but he had heard all about her. She was my pride and joy. I took her to the shows every once in a while to meet everyone, like my dad did with me when I was a kid.

Adam followed me upstairs to the little girl's room. Scottie was playing dolls with her aunt, but she dropped everything when she saw me.

She was a Mama's girl, for certain.

I scooped her up with no problem. My toddler hid her face from the new man, however. She had met him on a couple occasions, but she wasn't old enough yet to remember.

"It's okay, Princess, this is Mommy's friend Adam. Can you say hi?"

Adam waved and said hello, but Scottie just waved and hid her face again.

"Sorry, she's shy."

"That's okay," Adam said. "Me too."

I excused herself to put the little girl to bed, and Stephanie guided Adam into the hall. I had a feeling she was going to give him a speech that would rival the one our father gave to the first boy that ever asked me out.

When I rejoined them, Steph made it seem like she had done nothing of the sort, but I knew her better than that.

She practically shoved us out of the door, which only added to my suspicions. "Have fun!"

We went to a nice restaurant not far from the house. It was a fancy place, one of those that had candles on the tables and low lighting. I didn't think I had ever been somewhere like this.
