"Do you have to go?" I pouted, playing up the dramatics.

Kat had a planned get-together with her siblings to go to. She offered to have me come along, but I didn't want to disrupt. Kat cared a lot about her siblings, and Shane, in particular, wasn't too fond of me.

She shook her head at me. "If it was my parents, I'd try to get out of it."

"No, you wouldn't."

"No, I wouldn't," she conceded. "But I would want to. It's just lunch, I'll be back soon, and we can cuddle up and watch TV for the rest of the day."

"We only get a few days off, and you're going to spend it away from me," I sighed dramatically. I was really playing up the theatrics, which brought an amused smile to Kat's lips.

"It's Shane and Steph. We don't all meet up together much anymore. You'll be fine, you big goof." She planted a quick peck on my lips.

"Your siblings really mean a lot to you, huh? Mine are all older than me, what's it like having siblings around your age?"

"I mean, we fought, don't get me wrong," Kat said. "Middle school was a rough time. And Steph's a hair puller. I'm pretty sure I still have a bald spot."

"I can't tell you how many times my brothers caught me in a headlock."

"Oh me too," she assured. "But at the end of the day, she's someone who I know will always be in my corner. Shane, too. He always took care of us when Dad wasn't around."

"That's how Shari was for me. She was always making sure I wasn't getting into too much trouble," I told her.

Kat gave me a knowing look. "I'm sure she had her hands full."

"Oh yeah. I gave her hell."

Kat smiled. "I wouldn't expect anything less from you. Shane had an easier time with me and Steph."

"Until this year," I joked.

"Yeah, that's true." She kissed me once more. "I gotta go. I'll see you soon."

"Have fun. I'll just be here suffering until you get back."

She shook her head at me again before she left. As much as I liked to joke, I did hope she had a good time with her siblings. They clearly had a big impact on her and were important people in her life.

Since her retirement, Kat had been busy working on transforming my house into a home for us. Everything had finally been unpacked from the Florida house, and Scottie was getting used to the new space.

I savored every moment I got to spend at home with them now that I wasn't seeing Kat every day. I had never minded work or traveling, but this transition was taking a little while to get used to.

Kat's bump was growing bigger every day, and was obviously bigger every week when I got to see her in person. Scottie was giddy to show me her little sibling and love on Kat's bump.

"Scottie, do you want a little brother or a little sister?" I asked.

"Sister! I already have a little brother," she said, referring to Cameron.

It warmed my heart to hear that. Despite only knowing him for a short time, Scottie had taken Cameron under her wing and gracefully stepped into the big sister role. She asked for him often, and whenever they were together, the pair got along great. There was the occasional fight, like with most siblings, but Scottie showed a lot of patience with him.
