Late 1998/Early 1999
The first thing Scott's son said when meeting Scottie for the first time was, "Can I hold her?"
I gently set the baby into the boy's arms. His dad sat on the other side of him, making sure he was being careful.
"She's so little," Cody said. "When can she play with me?"
"Not for a while, honey," I told him. You'll have to take care of her until she's big enough."
Cody had no siblings of his own, and this was his chance to be a big brother. Godbrother, really. He took the job seriously.
Scottie grabbed at his finger with her little hand. He smiled brightly. "I can do that."
Scott gazed at her over his son's shoulder. "She's perfect. I still can't believe you named her after me."
He had been absolutely shocked the day I asked him to be her godfather. Most of the people close to me had a similar reaction. Scott and I had never been super close.
In my eyes, it was obvious. Scott needed this the most.
"Just a little reminder that there are people who care about you. Even if you don't always think so."
We shared a smile before looking back to our kids. Cody was beaming, and I thought I could see the ghost of a smile on my little baby.

"Aunt Kat!" Cody rushed down the stairs and into my open arm.
"Hi! Oh my gosh, you're getting so tall," I gushed, squeezing him tight. "You've got to quit growing. You're going to be taller than me soon."
On the other side, I held Scottie. She was just waking up and realizing where we were. Her eyes lit up when she recognized Scott and Cody.
"That's not too hard," Scott said, chuckling. "You are the shortest McMahon."
"At least I'm taller than Joli," I said with an amused grin. I could only make fun of her height when she wasn't around.
Scott had called me earlier in the week asking if I could bring Scottie over for a playdate. It was the first time we had visited in a while, which was exciting. I moved my schedule around to make it work, which meant my evening would be a little complicated.
I was meeting Leslie at the airport later on to drop off Scottie, then catching a flight to meet Shawn for Raw the next day. Honestly, it probably wasn't the busiest day I'd had recently. Juggling working more and being a mom wasn't easy, but it was worth it.
I told myself when I agreed to take on a bigger workload that I wouldn't sacrifice all of my time with Scottie for it.
I released Cody and let Scottie down. Scott crouched down to her level.
"Hey, Squirt. Sorry I missed your birthday."
She rubbed the sleep from her eyes before accepting a hug. "I'm four," she said, proud of her "big girl" status.
"Damn," Scott said. "You're growing up too fast."
"Damn," Scottie repeated.
Scott and I shared a look.
