Circa 1991

I laid on my stomach on my bed, braiding Steph's hair as she sat cross-legged on the floor in front of me. She was flipping through wedding magazines, and I craned my neck to look over her shoulder.

"Oh, that one!" I exclaimed as she landed on a page with a particularly beautiful dress and bride.

"That one? It's too plain."

"You're too plain."

I clipped another butterfly into her hair, and she flipped the page to a garish and loud dress and bouquet.

"Okay, wow, that's too much," she said.

"Definitely not plain," I agreed. "I can't even see the bride past the dress."

The two of us had been obsessed with weddings since we were younger. We both dreamed of getting swept off our feet by handsome princes and whisked away to a fairytale castle. Being that we were 14 and 15, those dreams were a long way off.

Steph switched to a different magazine and started flipping through pages again. So many flower arrangements, dresses, and center pieces flew by.

"Do you think it'll be fun or stressful?" She asked. "Real wedding planning, I mean."

"Both."

"That's not a real answer."

I finished her braid with a hair tie. "I think the fun part will be looking at dresses and flowers and stuff. Finding a date and a place and all that will be the hard part."

"I think I'll know exactly what I want," Steph boldly declared, joining me on the bed.

"You have a whole scrapbook made," I teased. "You'll just have to look through your notes."

"You helped me with it!"

"Well, duh."

"I want you to be my maid of honor, Kat." I thought she was just being sweet until she continued, "Then you can do the hard stuff for me." She stuck her tongue out at me.

"But then if I make you my maid of honor, you'll just have to do the hard stuff for my wedding."

She shrugged. "I just won't do it."

I shoved her off the bed and she landed with a soft thud.

"I was kidding!"

I giggled and reached down to grab one of the magazines. "I know."

Since Steph had already planned a day for wedding dress shopping, I thought it would be easiest to find my dress as well. Though we hadn't settled on a date yet, I knew I wanted to be married by the end of the year. It was soon, and would be close to Steph and Paul's wedding, but I was sure.

I would still be pregnant then, and potentially with a much bigger baby bump. Currently, I was barely even showing. Getting any dress I chose fitted would have to wait until much closer to the day.

It was a girls only day, since Shawn and Paul were both on the road. Steph and I were joined by our mother, Scottie, and Joli. Even Kev was working, so Joli joined us alone.

There were mixed reactions to the announcement of both my pregnancy and my engagement to Shawn. Steph was as supportive as ever, as she truly believed in Shawn and I. Steph had seen first hand how Shawn had changed and how great of a father he was to Scottie.
