Early March, 1998

When Dad asked for an audience with just Paul and I, we knew something was up. Of course, I had my suspicions, but I couldn't be sure.

My best guess was that we were going to discuss what to do with Shawn. Less than a month away from Wrestlemania, the countdown had officially started.

Which meant we needed a plan.

Dad sat behind his desk, staring at us for a long moment before he started. "I felt the need to have a meeting with the two of you to discuss what we're going to do as far as after Wrestlemania. As we all know, Shawn will be leaving, which leaves your characters dead in the water. I've done a lot of thinking on the subject, and I have a plan. You may not like it... but it's all we've got."

I took a deep breath, bracing myself for whatever Dad was going to say. With him, you never knew how crazy a plan was going to be.

"Starting immediately after Wrestlemania, we will be launching an angle with the two of you."

"With us... you mean as a couple?" I asked.

"Precisely. You'll be our new It Couple. The heat you'll get from turning on Shawn is exactly what we want. I think this is the best option to help both your characters keep their popularity."

Shawn and I as a couple made a lot of money. The amount of photo shoots, fan meet and greets, and publicity we did proved that. Dad didn't want to admit it, but he was losing a pretty penny with Shawn out of the picture. I could see what he was doing: I wouldn't draw as much by myself. He wanted to recreate that magic we had.

"There are... circumstances that might cut this angle short," Paul said, looking at me.

He was referring to my pregnancy. At some point, I was going to have to step out of the spotlight to have a baby. I wasn't ready to tell Dad about that, however.

"We really don't need to worry about that for a while," I said, before Dad could ask any questions. "If this is what's best... we'll do it."

I looked back at Paul, looking for his confirmation. I was willing, but I wouldn't go through with it if he wasn't.

He nodded.

There were far worse people to have to fake a relationship with. At least I knew I could trust Paul. As much as I knew it would crush Steph and Shawn, I was ready to do whatever we needed to do.

Besides, it was all for the cameras. Not that Shawn knew the difference.

As much as I was inconvenienced by Dad's sudden request to
talk with me, I was curious to know what he wanted. I wished I was at home with Scottie, but hearing about Dad's newest brainchild would be rewarding.

"McMahons have a wild imagination" he always told me. That was especially true for him.

What I wasn't expecting when I walked into his office, however, was to see Shawn also sitting there. I didn't mind seeing him, but his presence meant Dad had cooked something up for the both of us.

My thoughts swirled, shocked already. Dad didn't even need to open his mouth.

"Katherine, nice of you to join us. Please have a seat."

No words came out of me as I sat down. My mouth couldn't keep up with my brain.

"I know what you're thinking," Dad started, addressing both of us. "And yes, that's exactly what I'm here to talk about. I want to put the two of you back together again on-screen."
