"Surprise!" Shawn announced as he walked into Joli's bedroom. Paul walked in behind him.

I could hear Joli's sarcastic voice from in the hallway. "Good try, but Kev already told me you were coming."

"We're not your surprise. She is," Paul said as I walked in. Joli's face lit up at the sight of me, and I couldn't hold back my own smile. Joli and I hadn't had many opportunities to hang out in person, but we called regularly. Other than Steph, I would consider her my best friend.

"Kat!" she squealed. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm all better," I answered, sitting on the edge of her bed. Joli couldn't move much due to her broken ankle, so she was on bed rest. Her friend Paula was staying with her to help; she was the one who let us in. I knew how Joli felt, since I had just recently gotten over my injuries from the accident in January. "My rib is as good as new, and I can finally think again."

"I hope these guys aren't giving you too much trouble if you're out on the road again."

I shook my head. "Not any more than usual."

Paul handed Joli the huge bag of gummy bears the boys insisted on buying for her. "Here ya go, Kev told us to bring snacks."

"Oh yeah!" I reached into my coat pocket and retrieved the pack of cigarettes we picked up as well. "These too."

Joli grinned at us while she took our gifts. "You guys are the fuckin' best."

Shawn hopped up to sit on her dresser, while Paul took over the desk chair. "I'm telling Kev and Scott you said that," Shawn quipped. "Where are they, anyway? We're clearly the better friends here. I mean, we brought you Kat. What more can you ask for?"

"Sorry, boys, but Kid beat you to it. He was here weeks ago."

"Dammit," Shawn muttered under his breath.

"Did he keep you company?" I asked. "I know when the guys stayed with me a little while ago, he was super helpful."

"Oh, Kid was great. It was nice to just see a friendly face, you know?"

"Definitely," I said. "I begged Shawn to come pick me up as soon as I was able to walk. I stayed with my friend Sarah while I was recovering, but it just isn't the same."

Joli nodded. "I get what you mean. I'm real grateful to Paula and all, but she's not the boys."

"I bet you really miss them."

"Like hell."

"Well, then we need to make sure you're so entertained that you forget about all that," Shawn said. "I have this one story, right, about Bret."

"Oh, here we go," I said. Joli raised an eyebrow at me. "Buckle in."

Shawn stood up, in order to make more dramatic movements as he told his story. "So, first of all, the fucker insulted Kat. That's mistake number one. Then, he starts telling people I'm faking my knee injury. Mistake number two. So I approach the locker room, intending to have a completely civil conversation--"

Paul snickered. "Bullshit."

"Okay, so I stormed in. The details don't really matter. What matters is, I swing at him. He deserved it, and it isn't like he didn't see it coming. I get one good hit in before Davey shoves me into the lockers."
