Yesterday at tutoring
ZOE'S POV
Typical Jade.
Trying to squeeze information out of me.
I mean, sure I was withholding it in the first place, but it's not that important.
I'm just tutoring Calum.
No big deal.
After I'd received Jade's first text asking if I was busy, I replied with a simple,Hey Atkins!,
Umm...this isn't a very good time. I'm kind of tutoring someone but maybe tomorrow? And put my phone on the floor next to me so Calum and I could still get through the work.
I put my math book, textbook and worksheets out in front of me and he sat down opposite me.
"So where do you want to start?" I asked while flipping through the textbook.
"Uh, I don't know. What's easiest?"
I laugh to myself.
He looks at me wide eyed.
"What? What's funny?" He chuckles.
I shake my head and sigh.
"Nothing. Don't worry. So the easiest is probably either area formulae or indices."
I say while handing him the textbook.
He flips between the two topics and decides on indices.
"Ok so this is basically just revision from last year."
I say while flicking to the indices work in my book from last year.
I start explaining the basics, like if the bases are the same, you just keep them as they are and add or subtract the indices, depending on what the sign is inbetween the two numbers.
It's not as confusing as it seems, and I think Calum has realised that.
We were working through the textbook at a decent pace, every now and then I would get a text from Jade, type a quick reply and go back to helping Calum.
Within a few minutes we'd completed the first 3 sets of questions and we're halfway through the 4th, and he wasn't struggling as much anymore.
It was actually working!
I've tutored people before but I never just went straight to the textbook.
Every so often I'd get a text from Jade trying to figure out who I was tutoring.
I finally got her off my back but she sent one last text, probably just to piss me off.
All it said was 'Whatever you say ;)'
Of course I didn't reply, since she obviously thinks that's what I would do.
Defend myself.
Apparently I was glaring at my phone looking annoyed because Calum spoke up.
"Zoe what's up? You look like your phone just called you a bitch or something." He tilted his head to the right like a lost puppy.
I locked my phone and slid it towards my bag, not wanting to be tempted to send Jade another text, knowing that eventually she would find out who I was tutoring and jump to the conclusion that I like him.
I put my hands in my lap and looked back at my book.
"It's nothing, just people being nosy." I let out an exasperated laugh.
He nodded and went back to the textbook.
After about 15 minutes he shut it along with his workbook.
"How'd you go?" I asked looking up from my worksheets.
"Pretty good!" He looks up smiling, "I've done all of chapter 2, including the revision, and I've marked my work." He says showing me his workbook.
"Holy crap! And we've only been up here for an hour!" I've gotta say I'm impressed. That's about how long it takes me to do that much work.
"Well I think that's enough for our first day. Don't want your brain to explode." Wow. That was really smooth Zoe. Nice one. Idiot.
But he laughed anyway.
"It's only 5, I told my mum I wouldn't be back til late, I didn't know we'd get through it in an hour." He admitted while packing his stuff into his schoolbag.
I started stacking my books back on the desk and turned back to face him.
"Well, you could always stay here, until you have to go. B-but you don't have to, it's just an offer..."
I trail off looking at the floor.
He stands up with his bag in his hand.
"Yeah, that would be great. I mean, as long as it's ok with your parents." He asks more than says.
"I'll ask when we go downstairs." I tell him while grabbing my phone and heading towards the door.
***
"Yes sweetie that's fine. You guys can have the lounge room all to yourselves, I've got work to do on the computer anyway." My mum says while walking upstairs to the study.
I walk with Calum to the lounge room and start showing him some movies we could watch.
It was between Maleficent, Fury and 21 Jump Street.
Since I love them all I let Calum decide.
Well, try to decide.
"I don't know, don't make me choose!" He kept saying.
"Oh, stop complaining! You sound like a 3 year old." I said while laughing.
Mum had made us both hot chocolate and I was laughing so much I spilt some on my shirt.
"Shit! Oh no I like this shirt!" I whined running into the kitchen to get a towel to clean up my mess.
When I came back in, Calum was in hysterics, but as soon as I looked at him he tried to hold the laughter in.
But failed.
Suddenly he was looking at me with a stunned look on his face.
"Is that a Supernatural shirt?" He asked sounding amazed.
"Yeah I've had it for ages. Why?" I replied not thinking much of his question, and went back to cleaning up the hot chocolate that I got on the carpet.
"I love Supernatural. It's probably my favourite show." Calum said while kneeling down and helping me clean up the friggin mess I made.
"Really? Well we can watch that if you want." I say, hoping and praying he says yes.
"Oh my god yes! Have you seen the newest episode yet?" He asks with a giant smile on his face.
"No I got 5 minutes into it and then you were here." I explain.
"Ok well can we watch that one? I haven't seen it yet either."
I nod and turn on the TV so we can watch Supernatural.
I run to the cupboard to grab as many pillows and blankets as I can and come back to the lounge almost falling over all the blankets I'm carrying.
I'm about a metre away when I drop a small square cushion without noticing, and trip over it falling onto the couch and accidentally throwing the rest of the stuff on Calum.
When I recover I can't stop laughing at how ridiculous he looks covered in blankets and pillows.
Ok, ridiculous and adorable.
I help him out and press play.
The first 3 minutes is always the worst, there are so many jump scares it's not funny anymore.
I had to refrain from grabbing Calum's hand multiple times.
But of course, in one part about 20 minutes in, I got so scared I was hiding behind my pillow, and just as I looked back at the screen, something jumped out and grabbed Dean so fast, I screamed and buried my head in Calum's chest.
I had just realised what I'd done when he wraps his arm around me and pulls my blanket up around my shoulders.
I turn back around to face the TV but keep my head resting on his shoulder.
"You alright?" He asks, looking down at me.
I look up at him and can't help but smile.
"Yeah, I'm okay." I say as he pulls me closer to him.
The episode is nearly finished when I hear a car pull into the driveway.
"That'll be my dad." I sigh, not wanting to move from where I am.
I hear the front door open just as the end credits start.
Calum removes his arm from around me and we both stand up to turn the lights on.
"Oh, hey Zoe." My dad says from the kitchen, which is on the other side of the stairs that are directly in front of the door.
Calum follows me into the kitchen to meet my dad.
"Hi dad." I reply while putting our hot chocolate mugs in the sink.
He looks up from his phone and notices Calum.
"And who is this? I didn't know you had a boyfriend Zoe?" My dad asks curiously.
I try to stop my cheeks from turning beet red but only succeed for a few seconds.
"Uh no, this is Calum. I'm tutoring him in Math." I explain trying to keep calm.
My dad raises his eyebrows and continues.
"Well, you know what happens in the movies, the tutor always gets with the student." And with that he grabbed his phone and walked upstairs.
"I'm sorry about that. He can be a bit awkward sometimes." I apologise to Calum.
"It's ok, don't worry about it. I should probably get going now anyway, it's getting pretty late." He says looking at the clock above the sink.
I nod and we walk to the front door.
I open it and he steps out onto the front porch.
"Hey Zoe? Um, the boys and I are going to the beach on Saturday, and I was uh, wondering if maybe you wanted to join us...?" He trailed off, scuffing his shoes on the ground.
I smiled to myself, he's so cute when he's nervous.
"Yeah, that sounds fun." I replied smiling.
He looked up astonished.
"Oh, uh, great. You can bring Jade and Bree too if you want." Now he too was smiling.
"Sure. Just text me tomorrow when and where I should meet you." I say while handing him his school bag.
"Ok. Well I'll see you tomorrow Zoe." He waved while walking down my driveway to the footpath.
"Bye Calum." I waved back before he rounded the corner and I went back inside to have some dinner.

The next afternoon
ZOE'S POV
Stupid Alexus.
I was walking home from the bus stop with Jade, she's coming to my place for the afternoon, and we were ranting about Alexus and how stuck up and bitchy she is.
"I can't believe her! Just look at this text she sent me about Heather!" Jade said while showing me her phone.
The text read something about how she had a new dress that she wanted to wear and she thought of Heather's funeral and asked when it was.
I gave Jade her phone back and we kept walking.
"She's so full of bullshit Jade, don't stress over this." I assure her while draping my arm around her neck, and she does the same back.
When we arrive at my house we are both laughing about something Luke did at lunch and how she thought it was cute and I couldn't stop laughing at how adorable they were.
"You guys are so cute! When is he gonna ask you out? He better hurry up before I ask you for him!"
I giggle as we walk up the stairs to my strangely clean room.
"Wow Zoe such a rebel with your clean room!" Jade says sarcastically.
"Oh shut up! Never know who might want to see my room." I retort.
She scoffs at that and I laugh because she sounded like a horse.
"Speaking of people seeing your room, did Calum get to see it?" She asks playfully nudging my arm.
"What? How did you? Michael... I'm going to kill him!" I exclaim while throwing my bag onto my bed. I flop onto it and stare at the ceiling.
Jade sits down next to me.
Uh oh. Here comes the interrogation.
"Soooooo...?" She asks dragging it out.
"No! He didn't see my room. I was tutoring him. That's it." I say while covering my head with my panda pillow pet.
Jade doesn't say anything, but she hits me with one of my other pillows.
"Hey! Don't hit me!" I whine like a toddler.
"Then tell me the truth. Today when you saw Calum you were both really awkward and quiet. What happened?"
Dammit she noticed that too.
I've gotta tell her now.
"Ok fine." And I told her about how it took him about an hour to do the work, including the bit where we almost kissed, how we watched Supernatural and that he asked me to go to the beach on the weekend.
"Wait wait wait. Hold up." She held her hand out to stop me, "He asked you, to go out with him and his friends?" I nodded, not seeing where she was taking this.
"Zoe, that's technically a date." She giggled throwing my pillow at me.
"It is not! He said you and Bree could come too!" I told her.
Jade shook her head at me.
"That's exactly my point. If we're there, there'll be more people. Meaning it'll be less awkward for him to talk to you." As she was talking I was putting the pieces together in my head.
That would make sense.
"So what if it is a date?" I ask shrugging my shoulders.
"I'm just saying, you almost kissed, and now he's asking you out." Jade said before I hit her with my pillow pet, resulting in a miniature pillow fight that lasted for about half an hour and took both of our minds off Alexus.
***
For the rest of the afternoon Jade and I painted our nails, braided each other's hair and talked about our feelings.
Pfffft uh no.
We had a Marvel movie marathon consisting of Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
And I would just like to say that Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans are all gorgeous and I'm married to all of them no matter what Jade tells you.
We ordered pizza and garlic bread at around 7, it's now 8 and we've finished our food, along with our cans of soft drink.
"I should probably get going, we have school tomorrow so I should probably go to bed before 1am." She says as we take our rubbish to the bin in the kitchen.
"Why don't you just stay here?" I asked her, "My mum won't say no to you sleeping over, and you can just borrow some of my pyjamas." I continue, dusting my hands off over the bin.
"What about clothes for tomorrow?" She asks, while washing her hands.
"You can either borrow some of my stuff or we can drive round to your place in the morning and walk to school from there." I suggest as I chuck her the towel.
"Yeah ok, I'll text my mum."A/N
