Chapter 9

TRIGGER WARNING
I stood in front of my mirror, looking at myself. Today is my first day at my new job, I was so nervous.
"You can do this, you'll be fine Sophie" I kept talking, trying to convince myself I would be fine

I was so very wrong

6 hours earlier
"Morning Amelia"
"Morning Sophie, you ready for today"
"Mmm nervous but excited" I was shovelling down my breakfast as fast as I could
"We gotta leave in 10"
I finished eating, quickly brushed my teeth and we headed out the door.

I stood in the elevator, nervous to meet everyone. I needed this job to work for me.
The elevator came to a stop and the doors opened to reveal my new work place.
Amelia grabbed my hand a dragged me into the kitchen area.
"Omg Amelia shepherd, the rumour is true, you are coming back to us" someone woman gave her hug which made Amelia let go of my hand. I hovered in the door way, too shy to say anything.
Charlotte entered the room "Hey everyone, obviously you all know Amelia, but we also have DR Sophie Greyson joining us, be nice or I'll kick all your asses" we all laughed and everyone in the room introduced themselves .

These people are nice, I can work with them.

3 hours earlier
I just finished up with a patient and was working on some notes when someone stood in my doorway, I gave her a small smile and continued with what I was doing.
"So uh I just wanted to introduce my self, we didn't meet before, I was on a call at the hospital, I'm Violet the therapist"
"Oh uh nice to meet you Violet the therapist I'm Sophie"
She laughed a little "Sophie, hi, so if you need anything my office is two doors down"
"Uh thanks" she gave me a smile and walked out. That was awkward.
Just as I got back into the grove of things, I got interrupted again by a knock at the door.
"Come in" I didn't look up from work, until the person sat infront of me and by the perfume I knew it was Charlotte.
"Oh Charlotte thankgod"
"You met violet didn't ya"
"How'd you know"
"She's a nice person Sophie, just takes sometime getting used to her"
"I just feel so weird here, it's like it's my first day of school all over again"
"Yea I get it, you'll get used to it here and make friends with everybody"
We chatted for a while longer before both of us got paged 9-1-1 to the hospital.

We rushed out of my office and to the hospital.
"What have we got"
"Ambulance crashed, possible brain bleed, pulse is low, coded once on the ride over, he was on his way after having a heart attack at home.
We got the unknown man into the trauma room and worked on getting him stable.
Charlotte pulled me aside
"Is this his chart, did you find out who he was"
"Yes, he is here for coronary artery bypass grafting but there is something else"
"What is it"
"This Sean, he is Callie's brother"
"Fuck, okay" I turned away from her
"If you don't want to d-"
"I'm the best heart surgeon you've got here right now. I'm doing the surgery"

Seans scans come back and they didn't look good.
"Someone page Amelia shepherd and Charlotte King NOW"
Amelia came rushing in "what's going on"
"This is Sean, Callies brother but that's not important right now, I need you take a look at these"
"He needs surgery now"
"Charlotte can you get a team scrubbed in"

I entered the OR with Amelia and prepared for this surgery
"How much time does he have before you need to operate Amelia"
"1 hour, max"
"Alright I can fix his heart in less then that and when I start closing, start working on his brain. We can do this Amelia"
I began working on his heart and i quickly realised the damage was worse then what was shown on the scans.
"The damage is worse Amelia, as soon as it hits the hour mark, you have to start working, wether I'm finished or not"
I continued to the surgery and managed to compete it just before Amelia needed to start.
"I'm closing now, you can start Amelia"
Amelia stared her part of the surgery and in 10 minutes i was finished closing.
"Sophie, take a look at this"
"Are those parasites"
"Page Charlotte"
Charlotte came rushing in
"What's happened"
"He has parasites in his brain, we need another scan now"
We got a portable scan machine and took the images we needed
"Oh god, they've spread through his whole brain, I'll remove what I can but I won't be able to get them all without killing him"
"I'll go inform Callie, she just arrived"
Amelia spent the 30 minutes removing what she could before closing.

After the surgery
Sean was in his room, with Callie by his side, when all of sudden he started crashing. I ran into his room
"Get me a crash cart now"
I tried to everything to revive him but I was unsuccessful
"Time of death 3:37pm" I walked out of the room, unaware Callie was behind me
"YOU KILLED MY BROTHER"
"I'm sorry what. I didn't kill your brother Callie. He had parasites in his brain"
"NO YOU KILLED HIM"
By now people had gathered around to see what all the commotion was about.
"I didn't kill Sean Callie, Amelia and I, we did everything we could"
"I HOPE YOU FUCKING DIE YOU BITCH"
She started punching me and kicking me and suddenly my whole body went crashing through a glass door. I landed on the floor in excruciating  pain while security arrested Callie and took her out of the hospital.
Charlotte came rushing over
"You're gonna be okay, you'll be okay, stay with me"
"I- lo- you- you cha- Charlot-" and everything went black.

2 days later
I woke up in pain and I couldn't move
I tried talking but nothing would come out, all I could do was make small noises
"Hey your awake" Charlotte came over and gave me a sad smile, her eyes were filled with tears.
"Wha- happe-"
"Shh it's okay, you had brain surgery, but your okay now"
"Surg- brai-" I couldn't say full words or form proper sentences, but i knew I was glad Charlotte was here
"You've been asleep for 2 days, had us worried" she gave me some water which helped me to talk
"I meant wh- what I said Charlotte, I love you"
"I love you too Sophie" she leant down and gave me a kiss
"Well it's about time" Amelia entered the room with a big smile on her face
"Ame- Amelia"
"Hey soph, how you feeling"
"Wanna go back to work"
"Well we need to get you home, feeling better and then you can go back to work"
I pouted and gave her my best puppy dog eyes
"Not gonna work on me, I am the master of that look"
I turned to Charlotte, she glared at me "don't even think about trying it on me" she laughed

2 weeks after surgery
"Your scans look good Sophie" Amelia said as she walked into my room
"I reckon we can get you home"
"Thankgod for that" that earned me a laugh from both Charlotte and Amelia
I signed the discharge papers and we made our way home.

The car ride was silent, I hadn't mentioned anything but I had started to remember what happened and I was freaking out, the urge to cut was strong.
We finally arrived home and I walked into the house.
"I need to use the bathroom, am I allowed to go by myself"
"You should be fine, yell if you need help"
I walked over to the bathroom and pulled out my blade. I wasn't thinking straight and made a cut on my arm. My hands were shaking as I continued

I was on my seventh when the door swung open and there stood Charlotte
"Okay, alright, put the blade down I'm going to clean these up"
"I don't want to Charlotte, I deserve this" i half yelled, tears streaming down my face
"No you don't" she took a step closer
"I do, I do- I don't know how to st- stop. Please make it stop" tears streaming down my face harder then before and Charlotte took the blade from my hand.
She started cleaning my wounds, whispering sweet nothings to calm me down.
"Okay sweet girl, all finished, let's get you into some warm clothes and we can hop into bed, okay?"
I just stared blankly ahead, I felt guilty for what I had done.
"I'm sorry Charlotte"
"You have no need to to be sorry"
She helped me get changed and into my bed. We put on a movie and snuggle each other. It wasn't long before I was asleep.
