June's mother loved spring.
So it only made sense that June, and her sister Lily, were named as such. Funnily enough, though, June has always loved winter.
So it is no surprise to Lily when she hears her sister's squeal of delight at the sight of the falling snow.
"Let's go outside," June begs of her sister, knowing that Lily would be less than pleased to go out in the cold but hoping she will push aside her personal distaste.
"Sure," Lily replies through a sigh, seeing the pureness of the snow reflecting in her sister's eyes.
The sisters pile on layer after layer of clothing, echoes in their minds of their mother's repeated ramblings of always dressing warm, no matter how ridiculous they looked whilst waddling out in the bitter cold days as children.
"We can build a snowman," June's muffled voice sounds through her scarf and Lily shrugs, though she is sure her sister won't be able to see it underneath all the layers.
Just as June's hand wraps around the doorknob, however, a knock resounds on the door of their childhood home.
The two sisters exchange a puzzled look.
After their mother passed away three years ago, the two sisters have lived in the home she raised them in as a single mother. The three were rather reclusive, and the distance their mother put between the two sisters and the rest of the family was a permanent tear not even her funeral could stitch back together.
They don't ever get visitors.
June shrugs before twisting the knob and pulling the door open to come face to face with a red-nosed shivering boy.
"I'm so sorry if I'm bothering you," the boy - the man - says, holding his reddened hands up. "I can tell you were just leaving."
June's eyes widen at the beauty of the man in front of her, and she thanks the heavens above for the fact that the man can't possibly see the rose red blooming on her cheeks from underneath her scarf.
"No bother at all," June says, shaking her head. "What can we do for you?"
"My car got stuck in the ice," he says, jabbing his thumb behind him.
June and Lily crane their necks around the tall man in front of them to see that, indeed, there is a car parked on the side of the road just in front of their home.
"Ah," June nods. "Come in. You're shivering."
The man hesitates, rubbing his hands together before placing them in his jacket pockets. Apparently, his mother never instilled into his mind that he should dress more warmly for the winter. "I don't want to intrude."
"We were just going to play in the snow," June says.
"I was going to stand, shivering, while she played in the snow, to be honest," Lily pipes up, pulling the hat from her head to reveal her blonde hair beneath it.
The man laughs. "Is it okay if I use your phone to call a tow truck? I won't take up too much of your time."
June pulls the scarf from her face, only slightly disappointed that she won't be able to enjoy the chilly weather. "Take as much time as you need."
"I'm Jin, by the way," he says, stepping into the house and stomping the snow from his boots onto the small rug in the entrance.
"I'm June and this is my sister, Lily," June says as she begins to peel off her bundle of clothes layer by layer until she is left in a more comfortable outfit of one shirt and one pair of pants.
"You were prepared," Jin says, laughing as he stares down at the pile of clothes left behind. Lily begins to peel away at her own layers, complaining in a quiet voice that she's sweating.
"It's good to always be prepared for the winter," June says, smiling up at Jin. "Even though the winter is beautiful, it's brutal and if you're not fully prepared for it, it'll ice you straight to your blood. Which is why I always have a stash of hot chocolate on hand."
Jin smiles back. "I got stuck in front of the right house, then."
Lily scoops up the large pile of clothes left behind by her and her sister while the other two head to the kitchen.
