June lays next to Jin, facing away from him as he stares at the ceiling.
"What's wrong?" he finally decides to ask, realizing she's not going to be up front with what is bothering her - not like Lily was when she confronted him about everything that made her feel uncomfortable.
June ignores him, and he assumes that she's pretending to be asleep, though he knows she isn't.
"How can I fix whatever I did if I don't know what it is?" Jin asks, frowning at the ceiling as though he's talking to it.
June sits up, her anger being illuminated by the moonlight shining in her window. "You really don't know why I'm upset?"
Jin shakes his head. "If I knew, I would have apologized already."
"You got her the same ring as me," June says quietly, looking down at the ring on her finger. "I'm your girlfriend, and you got me a promise ring. Which would be so incredibly sweet if you didn't get the same thing for my sister. Do you not see how wrong that is? For some reason you and Lily both saw that as some kind of friendship thing, but that's not how I see it."
Jin sighs. "Because it was a friendship thing. She is important to you, and you are important to me. I want her to feel just as loved as you do because you care about her so much. I want to care about her too; she is going to be my family someday, right? Shouldn't I treat her that way, as someone I care deeply for?"
June's eyes close for a moment before she opens them and trains her weary gaze onto her boyfriend. "I understand where you were coming from, Jin. I do, and I'm so sorry my emotions are ruining such a beautiful moment. But do you see where I'm coming from? You essentially got your girlfriend's sister a promise ring - something that should just be reserved for the person you're promising to spend the rest of your life with. It makes me feel like you have some kind of romantic feelings for her."
Jin nods. "I understand that now, and I'm sorry that I didn't realize how it would come across."
June sends him a tired smile. "Let's just sleep. We can talk more tomorrow when we're both well rested."
Jin nods and watches as June lays down and falls asleep in just a few moments. He could tell she was fighting sleep during the argument.
Though Jin knows he won't be well rested by morning.
Because no matter how many times he tells himself he is supposed to love porcelain and strawberry, he can only think of sun-kissed and honey.
He knew exactly what he was doing when he bought those rings; he hoped Lily would catch on to it too, but unfortunately, the wrong sister picked up on the subliminal hint.
He just wants to scream it to the world. He wants to leave this bed and crawl into Lily's, kissing every inch of the skin that the sun itself pressed its lips upon.
But he can never do that.
Because he chose June.
No matter how badly he regrets his decision now.
