Abhimanyu had been feeling strange these days. Whenever he shuts his eyes, Akshara's smiling face would pop up.

He would be sitting in his cabin, and she would appear sitting on his desk, in front of him, holding two mugs of coffee. Even in the shower, sometimes he would feel Akshara sitting on the bathroom counter, giving him teasing looks.

He was an absolute mess. Abhimanyu had never felt these emotions before. He did not know what to do and whom to ask for help.

He sighed and leaned on the recliner, trying to forget about the girl who has been invading his mind lately. As he fell into a deep slumber, he shut down the entire world around him.

"Look Abhi, I made your favourite sabzi today. Have a try and tell me how it is?" Manjiri said and she put food on the plate of 8 years old Abhimanyu.

"Wow! Maa, this looks so delicious. I can't wait to eat this." As she was about to feed him the first morsel, a loud shout scared them.

"ABHIMANYU BIRLA! You have one second to come here." Manjiri started trembling and Abhimanyu looked scared, tears brimming in his eyes.

"Abhimanyu! Come here right now!" Harshwardhan shouted again, making both of them scurry towards him, hand in hand.

As they came in the lobby, there stood Harshwardhan Birla, CEO of Birla Hospital and Abhimanyu's father, seething in anger. He saw Abhimanyu, hiding behind his mother. He walked towards them and grabbed him by his arm despite Manjiri's pleads, making him stand in front of him.

"Do you know what wrong did you do today, Abhimanyu?" He asked, gripping Abhimanyu's shoulders.

"I don't know anything, Papa. I swear!" Abhimanyu trembled, his eyes downcast, too scared to look into his father's eyes.

"Really? So you didn't hit Mr. Awasthi's son at school? Answer me, Abhimanyu!" Harshwardhan growled and Abhimanyu whimpered.

"No Papa, I didn't hit him. He was the one who accidentally fell while pushing me. I swear I didn't do it." Abhimanyu pleaded.

A loud crisp voice rang in the house and Manjiri gasped at the scene. Her husband had slapped their son for the first time.

"Abhi!" She ran towards him to rub the cheek, where he was slapped.

Abhimanyu trembled in shock and fear, while she embraced him tightly to hide him from his father.

"Please, if Abhi says he didn't hit that child, it should be the truth. My Abhi never lies. Please Harsh" Manjiri begged and Harshwardhan scoffed.

"I didn't slap him because he hit another child. I slapped him because he hit Mr. Awasthi's son, accidentally or not. Do you know who he is? He is the owner of Awasthi Industries, one of the leading real estate agencies in India, which is worth millions. Here I am trying to improve my connections by sending your son to the prestigious school but this boy is destroying all my efforts!" Harshwardhan ranted and glared at Manjiri, pointing his finger towards her.

"This is all your fault Manjiri. I don't even know why my parents choose you, a middle-class teacher, as my, Harshwardhan Birla's wife. This is all your doing. You are the one spoiling him, making him disrespect me and go against me. I will not spare you. You wait!" Harshwardhan grabbed Manjiri's hand, pulled her away from Abhimanyu, and walked towards the main gates.

"No Papa, don't hurt Maa." Abhimanyu shouted as he ran after them.

Harshwardhan dragged Manjiri against her protests and threw her out of the gates, in the front garden. The weather on that day was bad, it was raining profusely, and thundering badly.

"You stay here till it gets in your stupid head that you should never disobey me!" He shouted and closed the door shut, leaving a sobbing Manjiri outside.

Abhimanyu banged at the door, pleading his father to open it. His mother was suffering outside and he didn't want it to happen. He begged and begged until his throat was sore.

"Please don't do this... Please I'm sorry, don't do this..." He cried hysterically.

"Please don't, please..." He cried.

"Abhi"

"No please no..."

"Abhi! Wake up!"

"No no no... I'm sorry"

"Abhimanyu, wake up!" Abhimanyu gasped for air as he woke up from his nightmare. He was sweating profusely.

"Shh, it's okay. Everything is fine. Shh... don't cry." Akshara rubbed his back, giving him water to drink as he came back to his senses.

"Here, have some water, Abhi." Akshara made him drink from the glass and was about to leave his side to put the empty glass away, when he hugged her, tightly wrapping his arms around her waist.

"Don't go. Don't leave me. Please" The vulnerability in his voice broke her. She had been with him for over a month but she has never seen him so broken like this.

Akshara rubbed his head, hugging him back. Slowly, she made herself comfortable on the recliner and he had his head on her lap, his arms still tightly snaked around her. Her hand was continuously caressing his head, lulling him to a peaceful sleep.

Unknowingly, both fell asleep in each other's arms.
