September 4th, 1984.

"We are young. Heartache to heartache, we stand. No promises, no demands. Love is a battlefield."

Penny sang the words to her favorite song into her hairbrush looking into the mirror, while getting ready for the day. She still had on some sweatpants and one of her brothers old jerseys from when he played sports, long before he gave all of his time to Karate.

It was the last day of summer and she really didn't want to do much. She had most of her supplies for school and had already picked out an outfit. There was practically nothing left for her to do. She thought she'd just chill out for the day and maybe invite her best friend, Ali Mills over for a movie or something.

She was pulled out of her thought process when she noticed the phone was ringing. Rolling her eyes she shouted, "BOBBY! CAN YOU GET THE GOD DAMN PHONE?"

She waited a moment.

"HELLO??"

When she got nothing back she decided to just pick up the phone. She knew better than to try it again. Her and her brother were a lot alike. They shared the same temperament. You could tell they were related alright. When Penny would "annoy" her older brother it would be like World War 3 in the Brown household.

She walked out of her bathroom and into her bedroom. She plopped down onto her bed and picked up her phone.

"Hello?" she spoke into the phone while rolling of her eyes.

She heard a chuckle from the other end. "Bobby? You sound very different. Are you feeling ill?" the familiar voice spoke. Penny could hear the smirk in his voice.

She groaned into the phone. "What do you want Lawrence?"

"Just wondering if Bobby's home, that's all. And if so, tell him to answer his phone instead of his little sister." she heard Johnny lightly laugh into the phone.

"Oh no problem Johnny Lawrence! I'll make sure to get this message to him as soon as possible! Anything for you!" Anyone who had ears could hear the sarcasm dripping from her voice.

"Oh don't be mean, short stuff. I'm just messing with you."

"And I'm just tired of you."

"What're you up to?"

"Wouldn't you like to know."

"Seriously. What are you gonna do for you last day of summer?"

"Nothing involving you, hopefully." She rolled her eyes walked out of her room with her phone in her hand and knocked on Bobby's bedroom door with the other.

"What?" Bobby's voice rung from the other side of the door.

"Bobby, your idiotic friend is on the phone and wants to talk to you for some reason. Just pick up the phone as soon as possible so I don't have to lose anymore brain cells talking to him" she smiled and she said it purposely into the phone.

The door opened suddenly and Penny was met with her brother. He was slightly annoyed, but at the same time when wasn't he? Bobby then looked at her as if she needed to explain again.

"That Lawrence kid is on the phone" She said rolling her eyes remembering the way he chuckled into the other end.

"Oh great," he immediately took the phone out of Penny's grip, "I'll take this and you can go in about your day." he said patting on her head.

"Bobby give me back my phone. You have your own that works just as good" Penny immediately protested and went to grab phone out of her brothers hand. But his grip was tighter than she imagined and when she tried prying the phone out of his hands, she lost her balance and stumbled back.

"Bobby please, I have to call Ali" she pleaded. She knew bringing up Ali would piss him off and encourage him to give the phone back to her.

Bobby gave her a look that was unrecognizable and handed her the phone. He immediately turned around and picked up his phone and looked back at Penny while mumbling into the phone. With that strange interaction, Penny walked out of her brothers room and shut the door behind her.

It wasn't a secret that Johnny and Ali had broken up. Penny had even encouraged it at one point. She knew how unhappy Ali was. Penny had actually spent a lot of time with her brother and his friends this past summer. That was until Ali and Johnny broke up. Everyone seemed to take it to heart except for Penny and Ali.

The blue eyed, brunette girl decided to not think about it anymore and dialed Ali's number. What she told Bobby wasn't a total lie, she did have to call Ali. The urgency was just a little exaggerated.

"Ali Mills speaking" Penny heard the blonde girl from the other end. Even her voice radiated such a good energy Penny wished she could only try to match.

"I just had the weirdest interaction in the history of interactions." Penny fell back on her bed and explained that happened, forgetting that Bobby and Johnny might still be on the phone.

"God he's such a dick. You would think that he would move on at least a little. And even worse. He roping his little Cobra Kais into the break up." Ali ranted into the phone.

Penny and Ali have been friend for years. They grew up on the same street and knew everything about each other. They could rant to each other and know that the other wouldn't go around spreading rumors. They were good friends to each other.

"Now you leave the dojo out of this! I have never talked bad about you Ali!" Penny heard yelling from one side of the call and remembered that Bobby and Johnny were still on the phone with each other. Her stomach dropped when she realized that the two boys had heard their entire conversation.

"Ali, just come over and we'll have the rest of this conversation here." She said quickly and hung up the phone. She rubbed her eyes and brought herself back up to her feet. She walked passed Bobby's door and flipped it off. She walked down the stairs and waited for Ali to arrive.
