"It's a cruel, cruel summer. Leavin' me here on my own. It's a cruel, cruel summer. Now you're gone."
Penny's alarm went off at 6:30 in the morning. She groaned and turned off her alarm with one hand. She slowly sat up and rubbed her eyes. The brunette stumbled out of her bed, into her bathroom and flicked the light-switch on. She flinched at the bright bathroom light.
After her quick shower, she put on her outfit she picked out a few days prior She got home at a pretty reasonable time. It was probably for the best that she left with Bobby. God knows what time she would've gotten home if she hadn't gone home when she did.
Once she was dressed, she looked in the mirror and smiled at her reflection. Penny was dressed in some jeans and a purple and white patterned sweater. She opted for her favorite pair of white sneakers. She let her hair dry naturally while doing her makeup. Once she was done, she looked in the mirror once more and felt confident in her own skin.
She walked out of her room and made her way towards the stairs. When she reached Bobby's door she pounded on it and shouted, "BOBBY. WAKE UP. WE HAVE SCHOOL" and proceeded downstairs.
When she got downstairs and saw the time on the stove, she was relieved. She had plenty of time to make breakfast for both herself and her brother. As much as Bobby annoyed Penny, he was still her brother and she still cared for him. And she knew that if she didn't make breakfast, he wasn't going to eat something until lunch.
When she was making the small breakfast enough for two to eat, Penny saw a signature red car pull into the driveway. She turned around and rolled her eyes.
Johnny Lawrence was picking up her brother for school.
The front door opened and she heard footsteps get louder, as the blonde haired boy was walking into the kitchen.
"Bobby's not down here yet. He's probably still asleep." she said focusing on her current task.
"Who said I was looking for Bobby?" Johnny said in a flirty tone.
Penny turned around and saw him looking her up and down. She instantly rolled her eyes and made a face. "God you are so gross. Why don't you make yourself useful and go see if Bobby is conscious."
As Johnny ran up the stairs, she put two plates of food on the table and decided to put two Eggo waffles in the toaster for herself. She knew about Johnny's home life and didn't know if he had eaten this morning. And also she wasn't that hungry, all the first day nerves made it impossible for her to eat.
She heard two pairs of footsteps tumbling down the stairs as her waffles popped. Penny took a bite and turned towards the boys. "Made breakfast for you hooligans. Eat it before it gets cold." and with that she took another bite and walked out the front door picking up her bag on her way out.
The girl put her headphones connected to her walkman on her ears and walked down the street to her best friends house. She walked to the music and danced, happy to finally have something to do for the day.
Once she arrived at the Mills residence, she walked up the driveway and knocked on the door. The door opened to Ali's mom still in her pajamas, smiling softly at the sight in front of her.
"You know, you don't have to knock everytime darling. I mean, you and Ali have been friends for as long as I can remember." Mrs. Mills said while opening the door to let Penny in.
"I know, I know. It's just I never want to intrude on anything."
"Don't you worry dear, you're family."
"PENNY!" Ali shouted as she sprinted down the stairs to wrap Penny in a warm embrace.
"Good morning to you too Ali Mills." Penny smiled and hugged the blonde back.
"You ready to head off to school?" Ali said grabbing her bag.
"Absolutely."
"Wait girls, I've got to get the yearly photo." Mrs. Mills grabbed the polaroid camera on the dining room table and quickly took a photo of the two.
After they said goodbye, two girls walked out of the house and walked up to Ali's car. They both got in and smiled at each other. Penny reached for the radio and started switching between the channels as Ali started driving to school.
"So... Johnny Lawrence is at your house right now and you didn't bother to tell me?"
Penny's head shot up "What?! How'd you know? I swear I was gonna tell you, but..."
"His car's in your driveway. And plus I'm not a complete and total idiot. I know that he picks Bobby boy before school."
"Oh right. I had yet another strange interaction with that boy. You see, I was making breakfast for Bobby and I. And he just barges in. He has a housekey so it wasn't like a breaking and entering situation. But I told him like 'Bobby's not down here' and he was all like 'Who said I was looking for Bobby?'. So I look behind me and he was totally checking me out. I mean, it was so gross. But then I just ended up giving him my breakfast and I ate an Eggo or two."
"Oooooo, looks like someone think Miss. Penny Lane Brown is hot and sexy." Ali said looking at Penny and biting her lip.
Penny rolled her eyes. She didn't totally oppose the idea of Johnny Lawrence checking her out, but considering he was her best friend's ex and best friends with her brother, the chance of it even being a thought was not even there.
"Pen, I don't mind. Honestly. I mean, I just wanna get rid of him. And if your the one he chooses, I would be way happier than if it were to be Cindy Williams." Ali said with a genuine smile plastered on her lips. "Speaking of the devil" she mumbled as she pulled into the parking spot at the school.
Penny looked out the window expecting to see Cindy Williams but to be met with a familiar blonde head of hair. He turned his head and smirked when he saw who was in the passenger seat of his ex girlfriend's car.
He walked over and opened the door for the brunette. She got out and rolled her eyes to try and suppress the sudden blush coming to her cheeks.
"I wanted to personally thank you for breakfast. Bobby told me to forget about it but that wouldn't be very gentleman-like of me, now would it?" He said, shutting the door.
"Yeah and we both know how much of a gentleman you are." she said not looking at him and just walking to her locker.
Instead of getting the hint that Penny was not in the mood to talk to him, the boy followed her to her locker.
"I can be a gentleman. Why don't you let me show you sometime?" Johnny said winking.
"Why don't you go to class, Lawrence?"
"I like when you call me that. Gets me all excited." He says leaning against a locker still trying to talk to her.
"Didn't need to know that information" she cringed and looked at him and getting her books from the locker. "Don't you have my brother to annoy instead of me?"
"Maybe. But your more fun. He feeds into my bullshit, whereas you don't. I'll see you later short stuff" he said winking and walking to his first period class.
Penny shut her locker and walked to her first class. She was one of the last people in because she walked a little slower to try and compose herself. When she looked around the classroom to find an open seat, she found that the only open seat was next to the one and only, Johnny Lawrence.
Of course.
