Chapter 16

Xedna 

I wake up in my bed looking around its dark. I get up, look out the window, and see the faint line of blue above the mountains. I pick up my phone off the bedside table to check the time. It's 4 am, figures I would wake up this early. I walk out of my room and down the halls and stairs. I guess I'm the only one awake right now. I pull on my hoodie and step outside feeling the cool air of the morning hit my face. It felt amazing I close my eyes and inhaled smelling the damp earth and the trees around me. "hmmm," I breath out stepping down into the dirt and feeling it squish between my toes. Hearing footsteps approaching through the trees I open my eyes and scan my surroundings. Looking through the trees I see the guys coming in from the patrol run. Giselle and them talking and laughing at something. I see Letty with her group come out as well. She looks at me funny as if something looks off about me standing outside. What's her problem this time? I smile at her trying to get just seem normal which is an understatement because I am far from normal. I see Vic come in as well and he looks at me weirdly as well. Ok, what is wrong with my face right now? I smile in his direction and he smiles back waving at me. 

"Hey, what are you doing awake this early? You don't have the next patrol today do you?" Victor asks me as he walks up to me. 

"No, that's not until tonight. I just couldn't sleep anymore my body was restless and wouldn't let me sleep anymore." I say crossing my arms across my chest. I hadn't put normal clothes on yet so I was just standing outside in my boxer shorts and a tank top. I wasn't fully comfortable being semi-naked in front of everyone like everyone else was yet. 

"Oh, so I'll see you tonight then with my group!" He says excitedly. "I can't wait to see that guardian's strength and speed in action!" His eyes twinkle like a kid with a dog training its new tricks. 

"Mmm, well at least one of us is excited about these abilities," I say less sarcastically. 

"What the matter You don't like your father's side?" He looks at me concerned. 

"Not really, being able to shake the earth every time you're mad or shatter something because you still underestimate your strength isn't exactly ideal to learn about at 16. you know?" God, now I sound depressing I really need to get over myself. 

"Wait you guys developed your powers at 16? Tara never mentioned that in all our talks." He says looking at me as if a light bulb has gone off in his head. " So you guys have only had these abilities for five years then huh?" he says as if connecting the dots. 

"Uh, yea that's right, so! you and Tara are getting along pretty well huh?" a small smile spreads across my face slowly as I watch his face slightly redden.  I just wanted the subject of me over with. 

"Haha you caught that did you? Yea I guess you could say we were getting close." 

"Were? What happened? I can tell you now she's very interested, and I'd rather see her with someone as good as you instead of that twat Shadow." I say with spite in my voice. He glances at me shocked at my statement. 

"Uh, well that's kind of why I backed off from her. She hasn't rejected Shadow yet and if there's a chance she's going to stay with him I don't want to be in that love triangle you know?" Vic scratches the back of his head looking anywhere but at me as he says this. Reject? What is he talking about?

"Reject Shadow? What do you mean?" I say and his eyes snap to mine as if he got caught saying something he shouldn't have. Oh no, he's not getting out of this one. " Come on spill it now. I wanna know all about this."  Victor sighs and starts to walk toward the garden signaling me to walk with him.

"You know about the mate part of the wolf but I guess no one told you about the rejection process of the wolf's mate." He looks at me cautiously as if he's doing something he isn't supposed to be doing. I look at him to continue on. " So You are allowed to reject your mate if you feel you don't want to be with them." He pauses.
