I Love Her

I love her like the sun
But the sun burns
I love her like the ocean
With her currents
I love her just as much as I love rainy days
And I hate her almost as much as hurricanes
Just like mother nature
She embraces her good
And knows her bad
But she won't change who she is
Or what she has
Sunburns we're from great days
And hurricanes create memories of helping hands
She re-teaches me things I knew when I was young
Like how to look for the good in all of the wrong

In 2018 my hometown was hit by a category give hurricane. I always look back on that day, that moment, with extreme hatred but also extreme love. It destroyed my town and filled my soul with anxiety and fear. It also taught me that they are good people in the world at a time that I really needed to learn that. It showed me the importance of gratitude and friendship and it also showed me how extremely privileged I was. This poem comes from that experience of having such love and such hate at the same time. It's overwhelming and confusing but it is also the most beautiful combination of emotions.
