One Year!

» You'd think that after a year of parenting, you'd be better at it. 

A year passed, and soon, little Shizuka's first birthday came. Lavishly planned by her doting parents, Matsuoka Shizuka was a princess for a day as friends and family attended to wish the little girl a happy birthday, and showered her with both gifts and attention. It was held at the town's local child playcare center, and as the children were sat down to eat after nearly an hour of playing on the playcenter's vast playground, Rin rose to his feet to address all the guests, standing with [Name] behind Shizuka's throne-like seat. Along with a tiara and puffy little dress, seated on her throne, Shizuka played her part as a princess well, giggling as her father patted the top of her head.

"We'd like to thank you all for coming today," began Rin, glancing down at his precious daughter. "Thank you all for coming and helping us to celebrate our Shizuka's first birthday, we really appreciate it. Before we start, I'd like to say a few words regarding the birthday girl." [Name] smiled and bowed her head, looking at the ground as Rin began his speech.

"Shizuka's birth was totally unplanned, and I won't deny that both [Name] and I were pretty shocked when we found out," he continued. "But honestly, I don't regret it at all. Having Shizuka was the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I'm proud to say that I'm her father. She's a loving, sweet little girl, and I hope that she can grow up to be like her beautiful mother right here." There were "aww"s from the crowd, and an embarrassed [Name] punched Rin in the arm, making everyone laugh before taking the reins from him.

"Well, now that all's been said, I think it's time to bring out the cake! What do you think, kids?" asked [Name], bending over so that she was at eye level with the twenty-odd children who were present. They all cheered in agreement, and [Name] beamed brightly at them all, Shizuka tugging at her [h/c] hair. When the cake came in on the trolley, all the children let out gasps of awe at its sheer size and magnitude, as well as the brightly coloured fondant and decorations that adorned it. However, for one person in the room, it wasn't the cake that caught their eye.

Standing on the side of the room not too far from where [Name], Rin and Shizuka were located, Matsuoka Gou's sharp eyes spotted an elegant sparkling diamond ring on [Name]'s left ring finger, a modest and feminine design. It hadn't been there yesterday, but surely by now, everyone had seen it. The couple hadn't made any official announcement yet, but Gou, knowing the two so well, smiled in for them. She was happy for her older brother and his bride-to-be.

They'll probably tell us after the birthday's over and done with, thought the maroon haired girl to herself, unable to keep the smile off of her face as she watched her brother, his loving fiancee, and their beautiful daughter. The Matsuoka-[Surname] trio were picture perfect, and Gou couldn't have wished a better family for her brother.
