chapter 39: Idiot

They would meet you here. No other instructions besides you will talk. As simple as that. Or at least you hoped it would be simple.

You grip the brick wall as you shuffle down the dusty slope to the river bank.
It was quiet, so they obviously weren't here yet. The river was flowing a lot faster today. There has been heavy rain the past few days, which was still draining from the streets. The birds were chirping and the wind was gently blowing through the tree's branches.

"There you are" Alex calls, you snap your body around to face them, both of them scuttling their ways to you down the slope. Smug smiles up to their ears. You step back, slight panic as you realise what you had started.
David slaps his hand into your shoulder.
"So-"
"Where do we begin?" Alex looks at him.
"Sho-should we explore while we talk?" You suggest.
They look at each other and the entrance to the sewers.
Then back at you and nod, smiles still on their faces.

You swallow quietly as you take the lead, stepping into the tunnel. It was dark. Very dark. You could hear the water flooding through further in.
"May-" you turn around.
"Don't wuss out now" David winks, both of them shove you forwards.
You walk hesitantly ahead, peaking around the corner slowly.
Mostly dark, the odd ray of light from holes in the top. Water droplets, light reflecting through them as they drip down from the ceiling.
"What did you want us for, y/n?" Alex asks, you could hear them both grinning.
"Thought we should...ta-talk" you look down at your feet in the water.
"No need for the stammering, you know us both...well" David scoffs.
You nod quickly.

Something echoes down the tunnel.
"What-" you look up, a shadow moves from the wall.
David covers your mouth.
"oh no" alex says, sarcastically.
David turns you to face him.
He pulls a scared face, before pushing you in front of him.
"It was probably a rat, idiot" David huffs.

You turn the corner, the water was disturbed. It wasn't settled like the rest was. Something was here. Hopefully Bill, but also. Hopefully not.
