Chapter 3
I don’t really know how long I’ve been trekking up and down the mountain but all I can say is that for some reason I would do anything for my new best friend. The black wolf which I have recently named Midnight has become very attached to me in the past couple of months. Midnight would follow me everywhere when Im up on the mountain camping.
The one place Midnight would never go is past the lake because that’s near town near humans near trouble. I guess she preferred the forest because she felt safer. Midnight would always look at me with those beautiful eyes filled with such love and trust. I found a replacement for my broken heart.
One night I was sitting out the front of my house looking up at the stars when I heard a commotion up on the side of the mountain. It sounded like dogs barking and people yelling and screaming. That’s when I heard it. The sound sent shivers down my spine and made my hair stand on edge. I heard my best friend cry out in pain at the sound of a shotgun.
I raced up the hill with my gun and a flash light towards where the sounds were coming from. I heard a man yelling at somebody else up at my special place a fire was lit and I saw her. Midnight was on her side with her head up growling at the men showing her white sharp teeth with her ears down facing the men that had shot her. I stepped out of the shadows with my gun pointing at the two men. They looked at me in surprise and told me to leave but I stood my ground looking them in the eyes.
I’ve never felt so enraged in my entire life. My heart almost broke when Midnight slowly crawled towards me and that’s when the men went to shoot her again. I yelled no and shot my gun into the sky as a warning. Then men looked at me with fear and curiosity on their faces. I told them that if they killed her I would personally see to it that they suffered extreme pain before I shoot them in the head ending their lives. One of the men raised his shot gun and before I knew what happened Midnight had jumped up and grabbed the guy holding the shotgun in the arm as the sound rang through my ears.
The second guy took off into the trees as I ran over to the other guy. I aimed my gun at his head and told him to get up slowly. He put the shotgun down and slowly stood up. He said what are you going to do to me? Are you going to shoot me to protect your wolf? I shot him in the leg at this and he buckled in agony that’s when I punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground. I told him that if he and his friend ever showed themselves on this side of the mountain that he should expect a bullet in the head. At this he got up and limped away as fast as he could.
Midnight had been shot twice once in the leg and another on her shoulder. She didn’t look good at all as she laid on her side again whining at the pain she was in. I looked into her eyes and she raised her head and licked my tears off my cheeks as I went to hug her. I don’t know why I did it but I decided that I was going to try and save her. I had to save her she was special to me.
I went to look for something to help carry her and left her by the fire to keep warm. When I found some old rope I decided I might have to drag her. As I walked back the area seemed brighter like there was a light glow coming from the fire. When I looked closer the light was coming from Midnight her entire body glowed with this white glow. I stood there watching as her wolfish form transformed into a human a woman. I was hypnotized by what was happening write in front of me. When the glow started to die down Midnight who was now a woman was lying naked on the ground near the fire. I slowly walked over to her in shock when I recognized who this woman was. She looked up at me with her beautiful green eyes filled with understanding and a look I couldn’t quite recognize.
Katey smiled at me and asked me to help her up. I slowly and carefully helped her up. I said why? She just smiled and held her finger to my lips as I walked her down the mountain to my home. Never in my entire life had I ever been faced with this and all I could say the only word that I could say was why?
