Chapter 17
After the small argument in the diner the tension between the three in the car could be cut with a knife and I kept my head against the window the whole ride through Lake Manitoc. As the Impala pulled in front of what I was assuming was the Carlton household I opted to stay in the car, but Dean turned back to look at me "after this we'll talk to the sheriff and then get a room at the local motel to settle for the night" I squinted and sat up a bit "and talk about what happened at breakfast?" He looked over at his brother who refused to look back and he shook his head "there's nothing to talk about" I scoffed "bullshit, there's obviously something to talk about" his eyes widened slightly before they turned into a glare "we have a job to do so let's just get on with it" he turned off the car before getting out.
Sam hesitated and mumbled a sorry before getting out after his brother. I ran my hands over my face and groaned heavily before getting out of the car and putting my hair up into a ponytail. I slammed the car door shut before walking up the wooden steps to the front porch, the wood creaking beneath my boots. "Will Carlton?" Dean's voice made me look up at the short man who opened the door "yeah, that's right" Dean pointed at himself Agent Ford, those are Agents Hamill and Fisher" I rolled my eyes at the complete nerd he was being and was even more surprised that Will didn't catch on to the obviously fake names Dean just fed him "We're with the US Wildlife Service" He held up his ID.
We were led off of the porch and towards the Lake, I got cold chills just standing near it. The scene was eerie enough as the cold air blew my hair into my line of view, my eyes glued to the waters as if it were calling to me. I zoned out Will as he spoke about what happened. I must've been staring for a long time, because when I turned at the feeling of Sam's hand on my shoulder Dean was already walking back towards the car. I shrugged off his hand and started after Dean. The police station smelled like Pine-sol and I sneezed slightly from the dust build up that could be seen from just opening the door.
"Now, I'm sorry, but why does the Wildlife Service care about one accidental drowning?" The sheriff pushed open the tiny door and let us follow him towards his office, Sam directly behind him and me behind Dean "You sure it's accidental? Will Carlton saw something grab his sister." I looked around at the cops who didn't seem to be doing their jobs and I scoffed knowing they should be working on this case "and Will Carlton is a grown man, not a child with a wild imagination" I added in and the three turned to me, causing me to hold up my hands "What? Am I not allowed to speak now?" Dean sighed softly "Like what, here sit please?" The sheriff turned the conversation and I sat down on the arm of Dean's chair, causing him to look up at me.
"There are no indigenous carnivores in that lake, there's nothing even big enough to pull down a person" I adjusted slightly "unless it was the Loch ness Monster" I looked up at him and bit my upper lip to stop from laughing as Dean did the same "yeah" he let out a chuckle "right" he looked over to his brother and I placed my hand on his shoulder to keep myself balanced, throwing him off guard as he looked up at me "you okay?" He whispered and I nodded slowly before looking back at the sheriff "Will Carlton was traumatized, and sometimes the mind plays tricks-" he finally sat down "We dragged that entire lake. We even ran a sonar sweep, just to be sure, and there was nothing down there." I rubbed my forehead "not even a body?" He shook his head "That's weird, though, I mean, that's, that's the third missing body this year." Dean sat forward as he spoke, causing my hand to slip from his shoulder.
