Chapter 18
I sat on one of the beds and bit off the skin from my bottom lip as I tried to think of what could possibly be drowning these victims and not leaving any of the bodies behind. I glanced up to see Sam on his computer "So there's the three drowning victims this year." I sat up a bit "Any before that?" I looked over to see Dean going through his bag of clothes behind Sam and I licked at the new cut on my lip "I'm going to assume so" "Uh, yeah" Sam looked over at me and turned his computer towards me a bit so that I could see "Six more spread out over the past thirty-five years. Those bodies were never recovered either. If there is something out there, it's picking up its pace." I ran my hands through my hair "Why would this thing be taking bodies though? It doesn't make any sense".
Dean threw a shirt at me and I scoffed before moving it to the side and scooting towards the edge of the bed, Sam sitting right in front of me "So, what, we got a lake monster on a binge?" "Do lake monsters even exist?" I tilted my head and Sam turned to look at me "You'd actually be surprised, but the whole lake monster theory, it, it just bugs me" Dean walked over and read it over Sam's shoulder as my phone started to ring. I looked down at it in confusion before standing up and going into the bathroom "Dad?" He didn't say anything at first, but the next words that came out of his mouth scared me. "The thing that killed your mother, it's after me baby and I just wanted to tell you that I love you" I shook my head in confusion "Dad, what are you talking about?" The line went dead suddenly and I felt my hands start to shake.
I stared at the phone thinking it was some kind of joke of his to get me to come home, so I put my phone into my back pocket and turned to open the door. Dean stood there in front of me with his fist raised before pointing back at Sam with his thumb "We uh found something out about that Lucas kid, his dad was one of the drowning victims and we were gonna go and talk with Andrea about it" his eyes looked over my face and he frowned a bit "You okay, you look like you've seen a ghost" I nodded before walking past him to get out of the bathroom before grabbing my jacket "It's nothing, let's just go and finish the case" Sam and Dean both watched me walk out of the door.
I paced around a bit to try and understand what I had just heard. The feeling in the pit of my stomach only got worse as I stood near the impala to wait for them both. Sam pointed at the door as he closed his laptop before standing "Wasn't that a bit weird?" Dean looked at his brother as he shoved his arms into the sleeves of his jacket "Isn't that just a girl thing? Come on, she said not to worry about it so let's not worry about it" Sam put on his own jacket and pushed in the chair "Of course you're gonna ignore this". Dean scoffed and grabbed his keys before walking towards the door "Why don't you ask her about that phone call?" Sam looked at him with a soft glare "She's still mad at me". Dean opened the door "Yeah, I wonder why. Oh wait, I know". Sam walked out after him and sighed softly.
I uncrossed my arms and looked at them "Finally, you both took longer than I do" Dean stuck out his tongue and walked over to the driver's side. "Child, you're a child WInchester" I got into the back and closed the door before pulling out and texting my father to see if that phone call was a prank so I could stop this feeling. Dean drove out of the parking lot before looking at me through the rearview mirror. He watched me put the phone away with an unreadable look before he looked back towards the road in front of him. We arrived at the park to screaming kids running around. I walked behind Sam as we made our way over to a sitting Andrea. "I'm here with my son" I looked over to see him coloring on his knee on a bench "Do you mind if I go and play with him?"
Dean seemed to like my idea and nodded "And if I say hi?". She smiled at me, but didn't say anything to Dean because he was already walking over to Lucas. I sighed and followed him before taking a seat right next to him "Hi again, do you remember me?" he looked up at me before looking back down to his drawing. I looked up at Dean and he held back a frustrated look as he picked up a toy soldier. "Oh, I used to love these things." He then pretended to shoot at things before throwing the toy down. I watched him with a smile creeping up on my face "So crayons is more your thing? That's cool. Chicks dig artists." I chuckled at him and shook my head "Don't listen to this dingus, chicks dig it when you're honest. A gentleman who can be himself"
Dean stared at me and I looked up at him before tilting my head. "What? it's the truth." I handed him a crayon before looking over the drawings that Lucas had on the bench, my fingers brushing over the one with the big black swirl. Dean held back his own smirk before looking at the drawing of a red bicycle "Hey, these are pretty good. Mind if we sit and draw with you for a while?" Dean sat down a bit more comfortably and I took a crayon as well. "I wouldn't say Dean is much of an artist, but I could draw something fierce" Lucas kept coloring and kept his eyes on the paper in front of him. Dean threw me a glare and I chuckled softly as he defended himself "I'm not so bad myself" he stood up from the ground and picked up the stack of papers before sitting down on the bench.
I grabbed a piece from the stack he moved and started to draw a unicorn in front of a rainbow, it was ironic because my life was anything but unicorns and rainbows. "You know, I'm thinking you can hear me, you just don't want to talk. I don't know exactly what happened to your dad, but I know it was something real bad. I think I know how you feel. When I was your age, I saw something." I looked up a bit and squinted my eyes at what he said "Anyway. Well, maybe you don't think anyone will listen to you, or, uh...or believe you. I want you to know that I will. You don't even have to say anything. You could draw me a picture about what you saw that day, with your dad, on the lake. Okay, no problem. This is for you." He held out a picture of stick figures, four stick figures "This is my family"
He then pointed each one out as I set my own crayon down "That's my dad. That's my mom. That's my geek brother, and that's me." I smiled when he said 'geek brother' I then looked over at Lucas and frowned a bit when he didn't say anything "All right, so I'm a sucky artist. I'll see you around" He got up and went over to Sam and Andrea and I lingered for a bit "You know, when I was younger I saw things too. I can still kinda see things, it's pretty scary stuff seeing something like that" He looked down at Dean's picture and I stood up before brushing off my jeans "it was nice coloring with you Lucas" I walked over to the group as Andrea was talking "We moved in with my dad. He helps out a lot. It's just...when I think about what Lucas went through, what he saw..." I set my hand on her shoulder "You don't have to keep going, Lucas has a lot of strength. He's a very kind boy" Dean nodded "Kids are strong. You'd be surprised what they can deal with."
Andrea frowned a bit and I removed my hand. "You know, he used to have such..life. He was hard to keep up with, to tell you the truth. Now he just sits there. Drawing those pictures, playing with those army men. I just wish-" I nodded before feeling a small hand gently tug on my jacket, I turned to see Lucas handing me the picture that he drew. I smiled and held it in my hand "thank you Lucas" he walked back over to the bench and I looked down at the picture of what seemed to be the Carlton house. I handed it over to Dean and he showed it to Sam. Why would he draw this house?.
