the first game.___
PAXTON SPENT HER DAY AVOIDING Scott and Stiles at all costs. She wouldn't look at them in any of the classes they share, even when Stiles and her had to work together in chemistry. They worked alone and told the teacher they did it together. Stiles waited for the perfect chance to talk to her but he was quick to take the hint, giving her the space she needed.
She uses lunch as a free period to work on the yearbook. Today, the lacrosse team has a game that sets them up for the rest of the season. So, she stops by the yearbook room to grab a camera. She had been lacking when it came to the club, it's just become too much for her to balance. And now with running into Scott and Stiles, her responsibilities were toppling over. She hates that it's becoming that way but it's hard to focus on anything other than figuring out everything else first. That's where her mind was, constantly thinking about her fathers murder and her old friends involvement.
"Excited for the game today?" a voice takes her by surprise from beside the desk she had been sitting at.
She looks up from her notebook to a boy with short brown hair and blue eyes. Matt Daehler, she had sat by him at their first meeting of the semester. "Oh, yeah," she says shortly.
He leans over her desk, looking to what she had been working on, "well, I'm excited to see your pictures."
She smiles politely in response before going back to her work. He leaves her alone once he realizes she isn't in the mood to talk. The two had rarely ever spoken before so hadn't expect much of a conversation.
The game tonight is against the rival town. It scares her to think about her brother being out on the field with Scott. He had already injured Jackson, though it was nothing major, it's only a matter of time before Charlie gets hurt.
If Scott could control it, he would make sure nothing happens to him. Jackson had it coming, he was ruthless towards Scott. A day doesn't go by where Jackson doesn't make a snarky comment about anyone, especially Scott.
Paxton leaves the yearbook room as the bell rings, packing the camera safely in her bag. The halls crowd quickly, forcing her to walk along the walls of lockers. Crossing a main intersection in the halls, she passes a few police officers talking to the principal. Noah Stilinski sticks out to her, he had always treated her like family. The last time she had seen him was her father's funeral.
They finish up their conversation as she walks around them. Looking up from the floor, she spots Scott and Stiles at a corner of the hall. They had been focused on Stile's dad until she had come into view. She spins around to avoid running into them but as she does, she comes close to falling into Noah.
"Paxton," he greets her with as small smile. "How've you been? Stiles told me you guys have a class together."
She swallows dryly, turning to look back at Stiles and Scott. Scott laughs as his friend looks almost offended like the two heard his dad from the distance.
She turns back to the man, "yeah, it's, uh, well it's school," she says honestly, "but, I've been good, I guess. What about you?"
"Oh, you know how it is at the station, chaotic. Stiles is a handful as always but I'm sure you already know that," he says like his son and her had never stopped communicating. Making her wonder how Stiles talks about her to his dad.
"When is Stiles not a handful," she jokes causing the man to laugh.
"Well, you better get to class. I'll see you at the game, kiddo," he pats her on the back before joining his officers.
