one step closer.

___

A FEW DAYS HAD PASSED SINCE the full moon and the emotional aftermath that followed. A few days since Paxton caught a false glimpse into what it was like the night her father passed away. She had glanced at Noah Stilinski wondering if her father would be somewhere nearby. But, he wasn't.

Sat beside Stiles in chemistry class, they share a pair of earbuds. Stiles convinced her to listen to his music after she had found a certain CD in his Jeep. She gladly took the chance to drown out her thoughts with the music, though somethings are harder to push away than others.

She stares unemotionally at her finished assignment in front of her. Mr. Harris, thinking low of his students, assigned three lab safety papers. All three being elementary level. She got them done quick, now she was left alone with music and the constant replay of the day she had to identify her father's body. It was all she could think about. Charlie had been with her but he couldn't bring himself to see. She had to be the one. The gashes haunt her constantly, whether it be right before bed or during chemistry class. His face was pale other than the claw mark that dug into his skin.

She sighs, her hands rubbing the exhaustion from her face. Stiles, who had been constantly stealing a glance at her, stops tapping his pencil against the table. Beside him, Scott looks at the blank page of work he was assigned. His new seat with them gave him the perfect view of the only thing his mind could focus on, Allison.

Paxton passes her work to them, letting them copy it. "So," she yawns, "did you two go to any dog parks last night?" she jokes while also trying to conceal the secret.

Stiles cuts his eyes to her before looking ahead and blinking, finding her joke bad. "What?" Scott asks, clueless and still thinking about Allison.

"Did you howl at the moon last night?"

"Stop," Stiles groans.

Scott's face brightened, a half smile slowly meeting his face once he realizes what she means. "Oh, you mean like werewolves."

Immediately Stiles shushes him, his blood pressure rising.

"Yes, like werewolves," she replies, glancing at Stiles for his reaction. His mouth parted, he deadpans to her. Blinking slowly at how he'd have to violently shush her. "What?" she asks innocently, a smirk rising as she watches his narrowing eyes.

He sighs as he pulls his earbud out, "well, now that you two have announced our.." he pauses to look around the room, completely paranoid, he swallows, "..business.. out there." His head swivels to them, sharing an annoyed expression. He turns back to her, "yes, actually we did 'go to a dog park' last night," his fingers make quotes around her words, mocking her, "horrible joke, by the way. And technically, the dog park found us. Well, Scott."

Her curiosity spikes, causing her to wake up. She sits up in her seat, anticipating more details. He looks around the room as if it were obvious they shouldn't talk about it in a class full of listening ears. He sighs, tilting his head to the ceiling slightly as he realizes that as much as he tries, he can't keep any information away from her.

"When Scott went home last night, you know, after we spent all night looking for him, Derek was waiting for him in his room."

"That's not terrifying."
