the ghosts of us.

___

2010, June.

"PAX?" THE BOY HESITATED calling out her name, wanting to savor the last few moments before having to wake her. Taking in just how beautiful she looked. "Paxton?" he cooed again.

He watched as her eyelashes slowly fluttered open, the bright sun blinding her already by peaking through his blinds. The girl gazed up to his face hovering above her. She couldn't fight the smile had.

The two had a sleepover that hadn't been planned. At least not planned for them to share the same bed alone. Scott had been invited but, with him being sick, he couldn't go.

The boy thought it had been perfect timing for Scott not to show. And though she'd normally never make a big deal out of it, she thought the same. Perfect timing.

The girl pulled the blue comforter over head to shield her bashful smile. With two fingers on the material of the blanket, he tugged it away from her. Quickly, she pulled it back up and over her head.

He rolled over onto his side, lifting the comforter up gently. Poking his head under with the contagious smile he had seen her wear. He was met with her eyes staring at him, creasing at the sides. Her smile stained his every thought.

"Hi," her voice is low, hushed for only his ears. And despite just waking up, she had a voice like silk that perked his ears up.

His dimples had been on display from the moment he had looked under the comforter. It drove her insane. But why, she didn't know nor understand.

"Hi," he repeated her words with a rasp that could only be blamed from waking up so early.

They stayed like that for a while, like children hiding in a pillow fort, so unaware of the life growing around them.

Little did they know that it would be the last morning they'd ever share together. At least for a while.

Or for a year.

2011, June.

Another summer had passed before the two would talk again. You see, Paxton and Stiles had a complicated history. Always friends, never more but it was the attraction that made it so interwoven.

The summer into freshman year had been an utterly complicated one. It started so sweet, the two spent the first month of the vacation together. Never apart, always with Scott. But then she started to grow distant. Key word; grow.

They grew apart, that's all it can be summed up to. Two friends who simply lost touch. It stung just the same as any other heartbreak. If they were branches of a tree, they were hanging above the ground facing opposite directions but their roots would always be entangled.

Neither knew which way they were going, both lost and on their own paths. That's why the end of that last summer together took a turn for the worst.
